Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen

and another Sedaka song .. the Queen of 1964

Anyone who's played on a record date
will remember stage door Jenny,
Well I saw her last night
and man she looked like she wasn't gettin' any
Oh - Rock 'n' roll kind of took its toll
when she shed her inhibitions,
Too many scenes in limousines
and dressing room intermissions.

Boomtown Rats : "Mary of the 4th Form"

A big hit for Geldof and co in 1977.

Sample lyrics

Sittin' in the front row
Mary of the fourth form
Turnin' all the boys on
She's turnin' all their heads around
Hitchin' up her short skirt
Stretchin' out her long legs
Pullin' up her stockings
She's combing out her black hair
Starin' at the teacher
Openin' her lips wide
Shiftin' in her seat, yeah
She slowly moves her hips aside

You never seem to hear songs by Roy Rogers or Gene Autry now

There was a young cowboy , he lives on the range
His horse and his cattle are his only companions
He works in the saddle and he sleeps in the canyons
Waiting for summer his pastures to change
And as the moon rises he sits by his fire
Thinking about women and glssses of beer

Sleepy head, kid sister
lying on the floor
18 years and younger, boy
Well she knows what she's waiting for
Yuki's a cool school mistress
She's an oriental princess
She shows films in the classroom, boy
They put the paper on the windows.

Great rocker by Macca and Wings

I doubt Bridget the Midget would get to number two in the charts these days. At the time my brother was in sixth form which included a midget named Bridgette. Sad

1978 kenny, I was 12 Shocked I loved my music even from a very young age, when I got a couple of quid from Dad for cleaning his car, tidying up the garden etc I would be straight down to the record department of WH Smiths in Streatham to buy a few 45rpm singles. Blondie, Fleetwood Mac, Boomtown Rats etc.

All use words the Woke world (and Betfair) believe will kill us if we hear / read them, no matter they are used entirely within context.

They're just a collection of sound waves or pixels on a screen FFS! Context is everything. We really are 'king dumb!

If you were going to be really consistent you would have to ban "The Merchant of Venice" and "Oliver Twist" both of which make Jezza look pro-Jewish.

Certain songs ,particularly those using 4 letter words, never got played on mainstream radio. Some dealing rather explicitly with sex are now acceptable but wouldn't have been 40 or 50 years ago. I was thinking more of ones that were hits, were played regularly and at the time nobody batted an eyelid. The ones I mentioned in the OP,except perhaps for Gary Glitter where the reason is a bit different, and a few others that have been mentioned such as Fairytale of New York and Brown Sugar. The latter was put forward by Hepworth in the article I referred to as was "China Girl". I'm not really a Bowie fan and though I know the tune I've never listened to the lyrics.

Most songs by The Anti-Nowhere League would I imagine be off limits these days.

"So What" a particular example.  It's on YouTube for anyone mildly curious. And naturally there are lyrics websites for anyone who might not quite hear the full poetry.

Perhaps best enjoyed when the Vicar isn't sitting in the same room.
