Anything going into ireland has to come by ferry or Aeroplane , at the point of departure anything destined for southern ireland - mark it with an invisible pen that shows up under ultra violet light, you might have a load of illumiinous sheep or pigs at night but who cares  , if it is found in northern ireland ,tax em and  do em , problem solved

The problem is everything that comes into N.Ireland has to through customs at some point

May would like this done between N.Ireland and the rest of the UK.

But DUP insist it is done on the border between the two Irelands, DUP see themselves as part of the UK, as

indeed N.Ireland is. They will not accept anything that threatens this.
Report 1st time poster • January 18, 2019 1:54 PM GMT
thought part of the argument was about return to the troubles, whether its invisible or not is not the problem, only the fact that the border isconsidered as different if only in text, theory etc,=could be consideredas a reason, excuse for those who may be that way inclined to consider it a border and target it

Do you know why Ireland is split?

James 1st was responsible for this. He settled Scottish Protestants in Ireland to keep down the Catholics.

Unfortunately when we decided to give Ireland it's independance the descendants of those Scottish Protestants

decided they wanted to stay with Britain and were prepared to fight for it.

It has not not been the perfect solution, but it has had to do.

I was asking do you agree with my views on the Irish free state during WW2, or do you think I am wrong

You have not put your view up yet lfc19712, so it is difficult to agree or disagree?

The Irish Free State were neutral in WW11, they were neither for or against us.

From 1918 - 1921 Ireland was war with Britain, until in 1921 they were given their Independence and Ireland

was split. This was followed by another war between the Irish Free State and the IRA as to who was to rule

the newly independent South of Ireland.

Bearing this in mind it is not all that surprising that the Irish Free State did not wish to fight for us in

WW11. A lot of people still had memories of their war for independence, and had not forgotten the dreaded

Black & Tans. All Ireland fought and died for us in WW 1.

Men from Northern Ireland fought and died for us in WW11.

When  I read the history of Ireland I am shocked and ashamed they way Britain has treated Ireland throughout

their history, I would not blame them for disliking Britain.

It is sad because Ireland is a beautiful country. I would have retired to a bungalow in S. Ireland had my

life worked out as it should. Sky Sports is available there, we can bet there as we can here and they drink

Guinness which I like.

Sadly my life feel apart so I will die in this country, although I can still drink Guinness lool

Your first sentence , the Irish free state we’re neutral in WW2 , they were neither for nor against us

How do you know they were neither for nor against us ?
All we know is that they refused to fight and help Britain
As we fought against the most evil and ruthless regime
So that’s what we do know .
And we know that they sent a letter of condolence to Berlin on Hitler’s death
Can you imagine , silly fools

That’s what we do know

Now that’s just your first sentence ebul
Sorry I’m not impressed so far
Report lfc1971 • January 19, 2019 4:50 PM GMT

Good history documentary...2 1/2 hours, about Elizabeth 1st.on channel 5 tonight

She was one of our greatest monarchs and extremely strong minded. She survived suitors who wanted to marry her

while her sister, Mary was still on the thread. Any agreement would have meant her own death. Through the

problems caused by Mary Queen of Scots, the Spanish Armada to the seriously deluded Earl of Essex who thought

he could replace her in her final years.

I think she did a little sad, old and lonelySad. But didn't she do well.

lfc1971 does not understand that having had to fight a war with Britain to gain their independence

That it would then be difficult for them to fight for us.

But they did not fight against us in WW11 they were neutral.

Their shipping was bombed by both the axis and allied powers.

They probably gave us a little help...I think they realised how bad Hitler was.

Although I suspect there may have been the odd German spy over there, trying to ferret out information

about N.Ireland and the rest of Britain, in an attempt to guide in their bombers.

Also them declaring war on Germany would probably not have done a lot of good, when one looks at the weapons

the Germans had, and what Southern Ireland had

I have no trouble with Southern Ireland's role in WW11, because I understand it.
