An elderly relative raised an interesting point the other day, there were no food banks during the war. Despite strict rationing that generation survived.

Could it have been due to lack of interest?

Yeabut in the war they used to stain their legs with tea to pretend they were wearing tights.

Moisok still does! Wink

I'd love to know what % of people going to foodbanks partake of ciggies and booze.
Report moisok January 1, 2019 8:28 PM GMT
I was wondering what stains you were on about for a moment!!!

tights weren't invented till the 50s

In fact I used to work for one company many years ago

I attended many fashion shows

They certainly wore nylons in the war? Well known. The GIs used to give them to women for "favours" as they were very hard to get hold of, and without even looking it up very many ww2 "pin ups" had women in stockings.
Report Just Checking January 1, 2019 8:44 PM GMT
And men wore them as well. Only if they served on submarines though. UFCDan will agree Tongue Out.

Food Banks give 3 day's emergency food.

If you can't stash some dried food and tins for a rainy day then you have a problem with basic housekeeping.

No debate that I've heard on FBs ever mentions the term 'personal responsibilty'. Nor is the question ever asked 'where's your extended family and friends? Can they not bung you a score?'

A decent bag of pasta costs a quid. So too porridge. Rice the same. Some tins with that and you're sorted.

they were nylon stockings - tights are completely different and not worn till the 50s

My ancestor's never needed the food banks, they used to wear green tights and poach venison.
Report Just Checking January 1, 2019 10:17 PM GMT
I'd have roast the venison myself. And if tights weren't invented until the 1950s, what did Robin's Merry men in tights wear!
Report mouse muldoon January 1, 2019 10:18 PM GMT
Exactly, us brits invented hosiery centuries ago.
