I was watching the old top of the pops programmes shown on bbc4 a while back, and this Depeche Mode song popped up, one I never heard before and I couldn't believe it, so good.

Here it is, enjoy....

I've given it some serious thought in recent weeks and have decided for humanity's behalf that the below is the greatest pop song of the 80s

Tears for Fears - Head Over Heels
Report SlippyBlue December 27, 2018 5:45 PM GMT
Depeche Mode are easily my favourite band of all time, I've seen them live more times that I care to remember. I was waiting at Bedford train station earlier today to get back to Dulwich. I popped into the local pub and had a livener and lobbed a fiver in the jukebox and played all Depeche Mode songs for half an hour and I was singing away like a goodun! Love

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YB2MQvt1Wzo  - Blasphemous Rumours live, it really doesn't get much better than this.
Report SlippyBlue December 27, 2018 5:48 PM GMT
PP, I do also really like Tears For Fears as well but their best song, for me anyway and I play it very often is "Woman In Chains" an absolute masterpiece of a song and I love it hugely.

Right, if I get a chance I'll use my self-imposed position as auditor of good taste and come up with an 80's Pop Top 10 later. Did a spotify playlist for crimbo eve which was along those lines and frankly it was a belter.

Stay tuned kids!

Prefab Sprout were wonderful as well, don't you forget about them P.P. Their album "Steve McQueen" is a complete and utter 10/10 job.Love
Report PorcupineorPineapple December 27, 2018 6:51 PM GMT
Prefab Sprout are a good shout. Though my fave song of theirs is Bonny which inexplicably was never released.

Deacon Blue are ok. Just a bit beige for me.

Right here goes. Got my minions on it and this is the definitive list. All were Top 40 hits and I tried to keep them as "pop". There was plenty of good metal for instance, and I also resisted the good shouts from the likes of The Cure, The Fall and REM. Couple of mainstream rock artists here but they were big charting ones so I think they're valid. Any complaints speak to the manager.

Talk Talk had some of the best tracks of the 80s, unreal that in 1984 Its My Life and Such a Shame didn't even chart in the UK! but were massive in Europe and the Usa. Test of time though, Its My Life now still gets played more than most of the above!

Actual fave track, the epic Living In Another World with superb mouth organ and Steve Winwood on keyboards from the Colour Of Spring.

Sadly the lead singer hated fame and the music biz and packed Talk Talk in before 40 and has never reformed since ;(

Yep Slippy, baffles me how it didn't get in the top 40 in 1984, made no 1 in Usa dance charts! I was 11 but I know if i'd heard it I would have loved it, didn't discover them till the best of in 1990. Radio 1 must not have played it in 1984...

They are like two bands as a lot love the experimental side of the last 2 albums Spirit Of Eden and Laughing Stock, but I will always love their more commercial stuff just wish they had made more. Guess if he had just been after money and fame they would never have been as good.
