I always thought that ten years was a bit lean, although I know some soldier on for more!

Talking to a lady whilst delivering Christmas cards, and she has two big dogs (she told me the breed but I don't hear good)!

She was saying she has to keep them apart, and one has a leg injury, and is something like eighty in human terms, as life expectancy, for the breed, is only seven years,
and this particular dog is nearly nine!

Why would you buy a dog. that you love and care for. and with all associated expense, that you will have to say goodbye to in just seven years?

Has to be heartbreaking for all, and particularly if you have children!

When I was a kid I always used to hear that one human year was equivalent to seven dog years. But I think it depends on the breed.

Seems to me that smaller breeds seem to live longer? Once knew an old lady who's cavalier spaniel stayed healthy and lived for 18 years. And me had a jack russell when I was a kid who was about 13 when he passed on. Tis heartbreaking though. Plain

Haven't had a dog for some years now and the last one had so many health problems

and the vet said it was largely due to it being a pedigree. Cost us a fortune! he was lovely though and a great companion.

If I got another one, I'd get a rescue dog - they seem to be a bit hardier (if that's a word!). Happy

Dear Lady Faye, I was thinking of my very own beautiful furry friends very
much so yesterday and those thoughts did bring forth joy , I did not
think about the things that brought tears,No..I only thought of the
Beautiful happiness that a loved pet can give you.
Dogs, silly things that they are don't ask for much,
but in return, if your open to reception, they give you
so, so much.

Judy(Lab), Major(Golden Lab), Lady(Jack Russell), Rocky(Alsation), Meg(Staffy)
We are not children, so none of us believe in heaven but on occasion I like to entertain such crazy thoughts and those thoughts bring to me Visions of my dogs forever playing and forever running in heavenly play.

I had a Labrador that made 17 years old, I was inconsolable when I had to let her go. My Muttley now is a Pomeranian and I love him dearly, he'll be 8 in March but he contracted meningitis a couple of years ago and he goes to 'Supervet' in Godalming once a month for his chemotherapy. He won't make old bones, I reckon he might have a couple of years left of quality life at best, I won't see him suffering if he has had enough and can't walk and look after himself, I'm truly dreading the day when I have to say goodbye to him, I'll be in absolute bits.Cry

Reading a list of life expectancy, by breed, they all seemed to be longer than she said, until I found a photo, which is definitely her dog!

My labrador was 21 when it sadly passed away.
Report northanlite December 26, 2018 8:08 PM GMT
21!!! holy hell that is very old for a bigish dog. my old mans westie passed away last month at 17
which is quite old even for a wee dog. jack russells are quite long lived, 21 not uncommon for that
breed but very old for a Lab.
my sis in law keeps getting black russian terriers & they croak at about 8, it breaks her heart then
she gets another one, or 2 at the moment. go figure.
Report themightymac December 26, 2018 8:29 PM GMT
Yes north 21 was indeed very old for a lab but he was lean and fit. Previous lab I had was about 13 which I think is about average. Slippy`s at 17 was also a great age. Labs will live long if one looks after them well and feeds and exercise them well.
Report northanlite December 26, 2018 8:37 PM GMT
feeding them is certainly key to keeping them alive Cool
Report themightymac December 26, 2018 9:03 PM GMT
A lot of folk kill their dogs with love, i.e. over feeding them with dinner scraps. Guy down the road has a lab about six and it must weigh over fifteen stone. Chocolate also a major killer and a lot of dog owners don't realise it. Kills thousands of dogs in the UK each year.

I have never seen a Russian terrier north. How are they for temperament? I assume they must be very good if your sister keeps getting them.

nice dogs spinonies. my in laws had one. she was a bit of a nervous sort but a gentle nature.
lived to 14.

i've got a spanish water dog, she is getting on a bit now (10) but still full of energy.
when she was younger you just could not exercise her enough, seemed to have unbreakable levels
of stamina. as the name suggests nuts about swimming. on more than one occasion i've thought she was
gone as she charged into the sea in wild conditions or a fast flowing river but she always made it back.
she has wised up a bit as she's got older. takes a look at the waves and thinks not today, thank goodness.

My little baby boy Tom died at 12 years of age about 18 months ago. It hit me hard and I still haven't gotten over it. I've had loads of dogs over the last 30 years. Another Foxy that died at 3yo from cancer. An absolutely beautiful Kelpie (in appearance and in temperament) that lived to 18. I had a cross Kelpie that at 10yo lost it's feeling in her back half. Took her for a walk in an old baby stroller and she saw a dog she didn't like and leapt out of the stroller to start a fight completely forgetting she was half paralysed!!

Here's my favourite. Tom.
