After stepping down as leader in 1999, Mr Ashdown - who served in the Special Boat Service during his time in the forces - was knighted and then made a peer as Lord Ashdown of Norton-sub-Hamdon.

He became High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina in May 2002.

Report Baphornet • December 22, 2018 11:13 PM GMT
surely if a member of the 'big two' he would have become a PM? Then again; maybe not as i feel he was far too honest. RIP Mr Ashdown
Report Just Checking • December 22, 2018 11:30 PM GMT
He had gravitas and seemed a properly rounded human being, which is why I think so many respected him even if they weren't LDs, unlike so many of the pissy hand wringing tw@ts who now fill politics...

nick clegg said his legacy would be the founder of modern liberalism , bit harsh blaming him for lots of this countrys ills on the day he died, but very true
Report Dr Crippen • December 23, 2018 10:17 AM GMT
I was going to write something similar 1tp.

About liberal policies bringing this country to the lawless socially split state it's in today compared to the last century.
Report 1st time poster • December 23, 2018 10:22 AM GMT
of course the recent modfather of modern liberalism cleggy is now trousering millions working for a company harvesting peoples personal data on an industrial scale, but thar ya go
Report Dr Crippen • December 23, 2018 10:42 AM GMT
Cleggy was on this morning singing the praises of Ashdown.

I had to turn off the radio because I couldn't stand the sound of his lying voice.

Report 1st time poster • December 23, 2018 12:03 PM GMT
not according to cleggy when asked this morning ashdown was all for it and negotiated lots of it ,the great liberal helping to heap austerity on the poor in this country all for the price of a few limousines for his party
Report anxious • December 23, 2018 12:10 PM GMT
Did clegg say this whatever it was a shameful episode by the liberals propping up the spivs and  shoving austerity on the public
Report saddo • December 23, 2018 12:19 PM GMT
