Could be renamed the Kay Burley rule then, Baphornet Grin
Report Baphornet • December 21, 2018 9:16 PM GMT
absolutely brilliant Bonnie! I shall remember that
Report donny osmond • December 21, 2018 10:07 PM GMT
not confusing at all

ref tells you if advantage is finnish
Report Baphornet • December 21, 2018 10:23 PM GMT
and there lise the problem, Donny - REFS. You see multiple refs calling "advantage over" as soon as a fly-half wellies the oval ball up field even before it is caught or not. You then have some REFS who play a longer advantage and let the game flow to see if an actual advantage can be made. Pathetic inconsistencies that litter most sports
Report Baphornet • December 21, 2018 10:31 PM GMT
and while i'm at & Aileen has peed me off; Line outs! Another load of inconsistencies. You can throw it in 3 ft left or right towards your players and get away with it, or you can throw it 6 inches left or right and get pinged! Irritating indeed. Linesmen in Rugby Union are a waste of space & blot on the game. I will get onto forward passes and linesmen another time
Report donny osmond • December 21, 2018 10:34 PM GMT
if its a knock on advantage then the kick will see normally seeadvantage over
so long as ball is forward of where knock on happened from point of team with
the advantage...

but...

if a team has a penalty advantage then the ref will want to see some
points scored or bring back game to where penalty happened if prigress is halted

a new penalty from defending team may see a choice of penalties
if the attack breaks down without points

a really bad foul by attacking team may see advantage lost and
penalty reversed !
Report donny osmond • December 21, 2018 10:37 PM GMT

all well and good if applied; but i maintain it isn't; far too many wrong calls
Report donny osmond • December 21, 2018 10:45 PM GMT
haha, you cant argue either cos ref is law in rugby union!
Report donny osmond • December 21, 2018 10:48 PM GMT
you can do a forward pass so long as your hands are moving backwards at point of release.

new zealand seem to have this mastered, !  Mischief

throw ins ...you are spot on, but watch the first one and act accordingly

scrums are the same...

well done on your knowledge, Donny. I love the game but it does drive me nuts. I was watching the Northamton Worcester game tonight & Barnes was reffing. I saw 2 blatant errors but he got no help from the linesman. Goodnight, Donny always a joy

Being pedantic, it's not a rule, it's a law. When I once asked a ref why I was offside he replied, because I said you were. Laugh I didn't ask again.Blush

If only football applied the advantage rule properly like they do in rugby
Report Baphornet • December 22, 2018 1:54 AM GMT
there's a few things that Football could learn from Rugby
Report Baphornet • December 22, 2018 1:58 AM GMT
cooperman; i was brought up to call a ref in Rugby sir. You can still hear it being used today. Especially from a pesky short-arsed malevolent aggravating scrum-half
Report cooperman • December 22, 2018 8:22 AM GMT
That's 100% correct Bap, a few years ago before retirement I sponsored a game at my local club. Amongst my guests were several Ass. Football fans who were both shocked and surprised at players addressing the Referee as Sir. Shocked
Report Baphornet • December 22, 2018 9:04 AM GMT
it would shock them, cooperman. The game is hard as hell but it's played by men (and women now) who understand that if those who rule are disrespected then anarchy and blood would rule on the pitch. A lesson that the EPL and others would do well to take note of.
Report cooperman • December 22, 2018 9:39 AM GMT
They could also learn the camaraderie amongst supporters. Never been to a match where they were segregated or hurling insults at each other. Just enjoy a pint or two before and after the game. Grin
Report Baphornet • December 22, 2018 9:59 AM GMT
yes cooperman. There's lots of sports like that though. You're more liable to get a slap if you go to Racing than Rugby. i remember training on a Tuesday & throwing a sickie into work on many a Wednesday due to ale consumption after trainingLaugh
Report donny osmond • December 22, 2018 12:20 PM GMT
would be brilliant if football refs were miked up like rugby refs.
Report SlippyBlue • December 22, 2018 12:42 PM GMT
I was a hooker playing rugby union and the scrum half had to feed the ball into the middle of the scrum or else it was called feeding and a free kick. Now they feed the ball into the second row pretty much all the time and it very rarely gets punished Sad
Report Baphornet • December 22, 2018 2:07 PM GMT
i used to enjoy the hooker scraping the ball back with his head
Report BARROWBOY • December 23, 2018 12:42 AM GMT
Advantage is played for far too long, often exacerbated by a ref giving a further dubious penalty because he’s unsure whether to end the advantage or not.introduce a time limit on it,say 40 seconds.
Report The_KAMIKAZEE_DRINKING_MACHINE • December 23, 2018 11:11 AM GMT
The advantage rule is good. Sometimes policed a little inconsistently but overall it's far better than the alternative.
Report mad mad moon • December 23, 2018 1:21 PM GMT
They need to sort out the scrum imo.
Stop the clock as soon as the first scrum collapses, and only start it again when it’s out or one team has control.
I reckon 5-6 minutes is wasted in every game due to reset scrums, and as it’s sometimes very difficult for the refs to apportion blame.
Its used as a time wasting tactic, especially in the last 5 minutes.
Report Baphornet • December 23, 2018 1:31 PM GMT
elf & safety now rule scrums. Talking of which.. The rules on tackling now change on a weekly basis it seems
Report The_KAMIKAZEE_DRINKING_MACHINE • December 23, 2018 1:32 PM GMT
Scrum re sets is a pet hate of mine. When I watch amateur club rugby on a Saturday arvo a scrum is over and done with in less than a minute. When I watch pro rugby on TV a scrum can go on for five minutes. Every set piece is an excuse for a drinks break. It's unbearable.
Report donny osmond • December 23, 2018 1:34 PM GMT
tackling rules are a bit of a knee jerk reaction, but i guess they had to do something.

high tackles are a nightmare for ball carriers. ....of course when they lower their head
into contact its catching out a few tacklers , and causing a false red.

better that than a snapped neck of course

hope they find a happy medium that doesnt wreck game
Report Baphornet • December 23, 2018 1:42 PM GMT
i worry about it, Donny

I was taught to tackle low at school & when into adulthood. Now that seems to be wrong as it can lead to more concussions. As rugby is a contact sport in all it's aspects; it would seem to be folly to me to try and negate the game so much. Injuries can happen anywhere or everywhere. I saw a the worst broken leg ever during my career when a half-back fell over his own feet.
Report donny osmond • December 23, 2018 1:47 PM GMT
the size of players now makes it a different game. too

the big lads were forwards and the speedy lads were backs and the little kid
was scrumhalf

i was fullback, was good kicker, and good defensive tackle, and always aimed at waist or legs

of course i fancied myself as a fly half, but didnt like being clattered, lol
Report Baphornet • December 23, 2018 1:54 PM GMT
haha i loved clattering. Agree with your 1st line, Donny. The game is full of beasts now & not all are legal beasts. They realised to compete with league when they went pro that they had to get bigger & fitter. The game has improved so much & consequently rules change to accomodate

You didn't like being "clattered" donny osmond Laugh On Sunday mornings, being in the front row, I could barely get out of bed such was the battering I used to get!

Report donny osmond • December 23, 2018 3:30 PM GMT
our forwards loved the battle. one lad though, had bad habit of going around the back and pulling
them out the ruck, maul or scrum. he always got pinged, lol, and we tried to tell him, but he still
infringed. he was strong as an ox though, so never got dropped, and it encouraged our lads to
recycle ball more quickly or get him to be carrier.

odd too how friendly the rugby lads were, in general, compared to the football lads.

still see lads from other schools we played against that i met up with again, via playing
golf and or drinking at rugby clubs beside our golf club.

back in the days of restricted opening the bars were staggered on sundays
so the 2 hours they were open allowed a short walk and a good days session
when required.

i dont see any football lads, maybe they were pished off i went to join the
rugby team , lol

My boy started playing in U/6s and is still going at U/28s. Played Union on Saturdays and League on Sundays until U16. Then he stuck with Union. He's played in so many teams in that time his room at home (doesn't live at home anymore!) is chock a block full of rugby shorts socks jerseys t-shirts singlets jackets track suits trophies we could clothe a couple of thousand homeless people in all the stuff!!

Having played with so many teams - clubs, school,an endless number of rep teams from clubs and schools that as a consequence he knows loads of people in the game. He cannot go to anywhere no matter how obscure without running into some blokes he used to play with or against or coached him or whatever. It's really nice.

I'm wondering how old you are? I'm thinking at least 70+ probably more. I was a 9 from 1976 to 1996 and never fed a scrum that didn't go directly into our second row or at least behind the hooker's leg that was stuck out waiting for it. (Hookers used to actually hook the ball back in the day!)

A girls game it is, AFLW starts soon but there is also a mens league, the most popular sporting league in the country.

A completely pointless sporting league that has denied an infinite number of Australian athletes the chance to compete internationally and help Australia be a strong player in a sport that actually has some relevance.

Report The_KAMIKAZEE_DRINKING_MACHINE • December 24, 2018 1:16 PM GMT
It's clear Australia and the USA had a bit of anti-Brit thinking when choosing sports. Thankfully us Aussies rejected soccer (Boring!!) but instead took up Rugby League and the shambolic Aussie Rules. So we compete internationally with a severely depleted Rugby team and go pretty well at cricket.

The USA rejected all three sports and as a consequence excel at none of them. This may be a good thing because if Rugby and soccer were the major sports in winter and cricket in summer then the USA would be winning everything.
