Not going to relatives this year. Also, turkey at x'mas is a traditional I do not adhere to religiously; duck is tastier, and a close relative of turkey, is it not? I'll still have the carrots, ice cream and Baileys. If McDonnald or Kfc was open I might indulge - they do lovely fillet-o-fish and succulent chicken respectively.

I'm not having any Xmas dinner. I live with my 88 yr old/young dad and he, just before Xmas,as he has done for the last 4 years, clears off to Manchester to see his 68 year old "lady friend' and he stays with her over Xmas, My father still has more  than enough lead in his pencil, to line a church roof. Which is quite apt because as a boy,he actually trained to be a priest at the up holland school. Anyways,I don't make a dinner for myself on Xmas day,I'll just grab anything I feel like eating, a pot noodle or whatever.I love eating meat but I've not eaten any for 2 years.

After much discussion Mrs H has decided on duck.

The shopping list was put together last night and so dinner will include roast parsnips and carrots, red cabbage cooked with vinegar and spice, home made apple sauce, boiled little potatoes, frozen petite pois, pigs in blankets.
Think oranges are involved somewhere - maybe in the stuffing.

'Jack...', a good alternative if only catering for a small number. It is much easier to manage, and lots less cleaning up especially if one is using the breast. It is very tasty, and the trimmings (roast parsnips and carrots and red cabbage) sounds absolutely delicious - I had that (no cabbage) last wednesday.

'Jack...', there is not much meat on a duck despite it having a big frame/carcass; a 2kg (Gressingham) one will probably cater for about 4 proper meat eating adults unlike a turkey, but the meat is richer and succulent. The breast is the best bit (I can eat a whole one and I'm not a meat person). May I suggest a 2nd one, and with the trimmings there will be sufficient meat to go round.

McCoy Carp - If you are going to buy a pork joint, buy what the butchers call "spare rib joint".  It has nothing to do with spare ribs as it is simply boned and rolled shoulder. It is the worlds best pig secretCool.  Perfect balance of meat to fat and crackling nearly all the way round.   Additionally your butcher will think that this is a bloke who knows his meat.

It's usual in polite society to refer to Turkey as ''white meat.''

So if they ask you where the white meat is - tell them it's over there next to the pork and beef.
Report blackbarn • December 21, 2018 7:54 PM GMT
"It's usual in polite society to refer to Turkey as "white meat".  Not your quote I know Crippen, but this is bo77ocks isn't it. In this context, white meat is merely the colloquial term for the breast meat of a fowl (Turkey, Chicken etc etc). Dark meat being the equivalent term for meat from said birds legs and wings.

Another one from my mum, who was in service in several big houses. The question is what can you pick up to eat off your plate.  Easy!!.  If it was flying when it was killed (Wild Duck, Goose, Pheasant, Partridge, Pigeon, Woodcock etc) you can pick up and eat off the bone.  Anything else, (Chicken or Turkey) must be knife and forked.

One duck feeds 2 people - just cut it straight down the middle. Mix a tablespoon of honey with juice from half an orange and pour it over the top. Roast in fairly hot oven so skin goes nice & black. Don't bother with that hot orange sauce lark. Simply peel a couple of oranges, cut into segments and toss in oil, vinegar, salt and pepper. Serve that with it in a seperate bowl, so people can spoon it over the duck together with roast potatoes and peas - that's more than enough veg. Make a thinnish gravy out of the giblets as well. That's how my Mum use to serve it for me & my Dad. Be prepared for messy fingers mind.

We've been advised for decades that saturated fat is deleterious to health.
Animal products are loaded with saturated fats.

Processed meat is carcinogenic.
While scorched protein also gives us cancer, with meat consumption itself regarded as a cancer risk.

https://www.cancercouncil.com.au/21639/cancer-prevention/diet-exercise/nutrition-diet/fruit-vegetables/meat-and-cancer/

They don't tell smokers to cut down on smoking cigarettes or alcoholics to drink less. They tell them to pack it in altogether.

So why tell people to cut down on eating animal products full of saturated fat, and possible carcinogens, instead of not eating it?

Despite the efforts of health professionals in the pay of the animal food industry to play down the risk, eating animal products can be very bad for us indeed.
