One of my local pubs owned by a celebrity chef sells Fish & chips for £13 - pint of bitter £3.80p and white wine and soda £6.00. Wetherspoons fish and chips was less than half the price with a pint thrown in and just a nice, in fact less greasy.

I wondered what had annoyed you Mr M.
Long time since I was in a Spoons. Don't remember eating anything but the beer must have been okay as we kept going back. |

cant wait to read Johnny Mustangs post ... Well since you asked Delta I have absolutely no objection to the outfit. If it gives poor people the opportunity of (what they might call) a good night out at modest prices then so be it. |

I am a fan of Spoons. Generally good selection of real ales that you won't find in other pubs. Round here £1.99 a pint (less 50p if I remember my CAMRA vouchers).
Not so sure about the food. The large breakfast plate is full of cheap stuff, the sausages are the cheapest. Had a steak meal once which was poor. Two other gripes, while Im at it! Tables are cleared infrequently and are often dirty. The new app means lazy bar stewards get served ahead of those at the bar (where you have to order guest beers as not on the app.) |

The trouble is you can't generalise about their pubs. Some are perfectly civilised, others I have walked in,had a quick look at the clientele, and walked straight out again.

That's true Salmon - if Wetherspoons realise that that's happening, they pull out. Most are frequented by older men and their mates because of the price of the beer and yesterday I saw a lot of well behaved students taking advantage of the prices. Our ageing golf society meet up once a month in one in the city centre, which is easy for all to attend - six or seven pints of decent beer and a curry with a free pint - no music so we can have a decent conversation. Then the wibbly wobbly way home. Haven't found anywhere better. Never seen any trouble.

The fish and chips on Fridays are okay.
Some friends went there for a Christmas dinner recently. They reported the meal as simply appalling. Neither of them cleared their plates. l Which is amazing to think that a national chain would serve up slop like they described. |
|
By:
In my town two pubs from the 1800s have been taken over by the chains. At least the one taken over by 'spoons keeps the original pub name. The one taken over by O'Neills loses the name which is a bit sad I think

several nice buildings have been saved by spoons - particularly the opera house - where they still have operas!!!
I have had several nice med rare steaks there and the real ale variety is second to none Sofia kenny - steaks aren't good micro waved - maybe they deep fry them - I doubt it - for naughty food their chips are delish some of the other stuff is no better than standard pub grub you need to be selective mind you, I live in a posh area and the two I go to reflect that |

I go to the Spoons in Brixton for a couple of jars, The Beehive, whenever I go to the market and shops there. Always well staffed and although it's usually very busy you don't have to wait long to get served and they show RUK. Also when I take Muttley to the groomers in Beckenham I plot up in The White Horse Spoons on the high street for a couple of hours, always spotless clean and again plenty of friendly staff on hand. I don't eat the food though but it looks OK from what I've seen.

you ok SLIPPY, i was by your the other day visiting my nephew ( west norwood ) he took me to a pub called " the rosendale", 1 pint of guinness and 1 pint of lager ..... £ 10-40p.

Yes GLASGOWCALLING, I know 'The Rosendale' pub very well and usually go there at least once a week when I take Muttley for a walk and have a lunchtime pint as they are very dog friendly in there. The food is of a very high standard as well, I'd recommend that pub to anyone, one of the best in the area in fact. Paying over a tenner for a couple of pints is just the norm in my neck of the woods

Food is pretty awful in spoons, obviously microwaved, and the plates are rarely hot, and nearly always luke warm if you're lucky when you've finished.

the stake aren't or the chips or the salad hope this helps
nore is the real ale even more help from the hq of MO TOWERS no cats singed either or the onion rings or the fried eggs etc |

Having a think through the (sizeable) menu I would say very little of it is possible to microwave. I avoided spoons for years because of a reputation which turns out to be absolutely false in my own experience.

There are some cracking old spoons buildings.
Near the Millennium is an old theatre - Prince of Wales. Winter Gardens in Harrogate. Palladium in Llandudno. Those are just ones I have been to. They should be congratulated on taking an interest in the local history of each place and local famous people. |
