I have an item on here...brand new...cost £215.00

Asking £95.00...

Have an offer of £85.00 which I declined, because with fees and the real cost of postage,  the deal is on it's knees!

Reaching out to the buyer my counter offer was £90.00...

This is his response....

That's perfect thanks. Thanks for the counter offer but at the mo things are a bit tight so close to crimbo.
Are you relisting if it doesn't sell as I will be very interested after payday in the new year?
Many thanks
Chris

What's the appropriate response here....**** off (or something on those lines)!

anyone who says "crimbo" when trying to broker a deal, should be dropped from a great height. Or in this case **** off would seem rather more appropriate

It sounds like the person hasn't much money and frankly the thing is finding its natural value in the current market.

If it's really worth 95, someone will pay that.....

I purchased a Adidas ali top in the summer, the seller took ages to send so I had to open a case.
After 4 weeks the item arrived, the seller then wanted me to leave feedback the second I had the item
So the case was closed.
The item had arrived whilst I was at work so there was no way I was closing the case until I had seen the item.
Any way this idiot then got very demanding as pay pal had frozen the money which he blamed on me.
He was sending me message after mesage demanding sudden action.
Just replied I was going to use the same laid back way of doing business that he used.

daft ****.

Maybe to resell again. May I ask what it is? I'm looking for a gift in that price range but undecided about the item yet?

The worst experience by a long way was the very first thing I sold!

It was a DeWalt 24 volt drill with three batteries...

Seriously heavy and I had it as "collection only....

Buyer asks if I will post it and says he will send £10.00 in the post!

That never happened and then he asked how much delivery would be, with a certain carrier who base their business on e-bay!

Just have to mention here (to add to the issue) that for some reason that I can't recall, he stated that he was a "Special Constable!

I gave him the price, which was £13.50 and he accepted, so had it delivered by said company (packing was horendous because of the weight)
and then the trouble began!

The carrier had tried to deliver twice and he didn't respond!

Their depot was only three miles away, so he could have collected it, and they wanted to ask if I should have it returned to me.

Messaged him, and he promised to tell them where to leave it.

Three months later I was being asked for feedback (of which I never heard of before) and I replied that I never received the promised delivery costs.

The b@st@rd responded that "the batteries didn't hold charge, no replies to his texts, not as described"!

So, after three months, this "special constable", from who I never heard, puts the boot in!!!

Ok...here is the most ridiculous buying experience...

I'm usually very careful to check reviews of a seller, but this time I didn't!

I bought a PS4 controller for my grandson, from a company with a UK address.

Later I discovered that the supplier was in Indonesia but, even more weirdly, the seller was in Australia, and the reviews were damning
with people saying they never received them and/or they were counterfeit!"

Sent an e-mail, not expecting a reply, but just a few days later it arrived!

That wasn't the end of it, but a few days later another one arrived!!!

That has to be the daftest thing that ever happened on e-bay!

Hell's bells Delta....I hadn't heard of that!

Just had a quick look at the proposals, and I see it doesn't kick in till September and there may be ways to opt out by
"white listing" a trusted seller, so will have to wait till the banks agree on details.

If you want a set price for something say so, NO OFFERS, otherwise i think its a good bid.
Report blackbarn • December 17, 2018 6:12 PM GMT
Re the original post - the customers response seems to me to be a perfectly courteous and reasonable one. He made an offer that you declined. The fact you reduced your asking price to nearer his offer is neither here nor there.  His offer was presumably either what he could afford or what he was prepared to pay at that time. Am I missing somethingSurprised?
Report lybertyne • December 17, 2018 6:33 PM GMT
I have a stock of items which I have been selling since May.  Buyers can either pay full price (£27) or make an offer (I generally accept around £23.50/ £24).  Postage is free.  I have a habit of looking up my buyers' house prices and it's always those living in expensive properties (£700k plus) who try to haggle.  I agreed on £24 on the weekend for one sale.  Turned out she was a professor at UCL living in a £1.8m flat in the heart of London.
Report Callisto-moon • December 17, 2018 6:43 PM GMT
Why would lady accept the first offer? everyone must go in lower than what they would actually pay?
Report blackbarn • December 17, 2018 7:01 PM GMT
Callisto - Doesn't seem like it in this case does itWink.  By selling with open to offers, you are showing that you do not expect to get the asking price. Buyers know this and make offers accordingly. As this guy demonstrates, some offers are their best and final offer.
Report impossible123 • December 17, 2018 7:09 PM GMT
The rich ones have tended to be the most bargain conscious, and most likely to "cheat" on the underground too eg about 3 decades ago a survey found that those from Richmond were the most crafty fare-dodgers on the London Tube.

I buy quite a bit of stuff from E-bay and Amazon and most of the time have been extremely happy, but do try to stay away from those despatched from Hong Kong or China as items advertised were not always what they seemed eg boiled egg slicer, egg rings, vegetable chopper/slicer/dicer - the materials used were inferior quality and products not durable.
Report Callisto-moon • December 17, 2018 8:58 PM GMT
yes I see it clearly varies depending on the person.

I always makr the first offer lower than what I will pay thinking thatr seller is bound to counter.
Report Callisto-moon • December 17, 2018 9:00 PM GMT
impossible theres another days wear and tear on the insoles so ill drop to £75 now.
Report blackbarn • December 17, 2018 10:31 PM GMT
Callisto - It certainly does!!!   Your tactic is fine when it works, but remember loads of items on Ebay are listed at very inflated buy it now prices, with the best offer process used just to test the market as to what the item might make.  This testing process is often used with items that have a low start but a reserve price. Many of these items are not for sale but are just testing the market.   Don't get me wrong, I love Ebay and have been buying and selling happily for over 16 years, but it can be a minefield for the uninitiated.

I'm one of those mugs who pays the inflated "buy it now" price -- though I do not buy much from ebay and it is mainly cheap stuff, less than £100. I kind of know it's a rip off but for the sort of sums I am paying, life is too short to spend hours watching the bidding or haggling to save a tenner. Maybe that's why I am still poor Sad
Report Callisto-moon • December 18, 2018 7:38 AM GMT
I had one scam on ebay that lasted for a month, some fella was selling 20 "PICTURES" of his wife for £20 which were send
to your email. there was no copyright and he made no indication that you were not able to sel them on.
I paid the £20 then popped them back up for sale at £5 I sold loads on the first night, anyway he started to kick off which I was expecting
but I just said that no copyright was implicated nor any request not to be sold on.
Ended up selling over 400 sets of his pics but as people realised there was a bg pervy market on ebay more people got involved
selling adult sets so ebay put an end to it.

i asked if he had any naked photo's of his wife when he said no i said "well would you like to buy some".
Report blackbarn • December 19, 2018 2:47 PM GMT
LFV - Nothing in Ebay rules to prevent buyers making offers, even if not invited by the "best offer" process. In fact, you indicated you were happy to accept best offers by making a counter offer to his offer.

You say "what kind of lunatic makes an offer and then says he can't afford it?".   His offer was £85, which presumably he could afford at the time, you countered with £90 which he refused.

Am I still missing something?
