The tower that houses Big Ben Is called "the great tower" so who is Ben,The bell or the clock?

and another question,is it ok to call it Benny,
and more importantly "who is the Ben that the bell or clock is names after."?

sky says ben is showing the time of day.if ben is the bell he would announce the time of day when he gongs.
and ben chimes in the new year,

so ben is the bell,we have worked that out,
but ben does not show the time,its the clock that does that,so what is the clocks name?

now if the clock and the bell are called ben,the correct way to say it is "the ben's and bringing in the new year"because there are two Ben's.
So until this is sorted out i guess its best to say ben and Keith are welcoming in the new year.
