Is there more than one version of the bible?

Is it readable like a book is?

Numerous versions.

There are at least 2 versions of the Bible. There's the one that all heterosexuals read that has in Leviticus that homosexuality is an abomination and then there's the one that the LGBTQI lot read which has in Leviticus that there is homosexuality and something about the abominable snowperson.

Yes there are loads of versions, there are the new dumbed down ones that get rid of the olde worlde language.

There are differences between catholic and protestant as well, the protestant one has more books in it.

King James is generally considered "the standard".

And the media continued to turn a blind eye while those leaning left people all brought out the big brush and swept together. We shall continue to pretend those victims don't exist and save our energy for the more important issues like what some funny hair man is doing in America or big Dave who was banned from Marks and Spencer for taking his dress off.

Great read Steve and up there with the best of them Stephen King, J.K.Rowling and all the other writers of fiction.
The bible is man written and man compiled. Selected from all the available tales of the day and put together after much debate.
Not to be taken seriously.

Jesus was a man of few words,he seen a tax man one day called Mathew for the first time, walked over to him and said "follow me" and then walked away, and Mathew chucked the tax money on the ground and started following Jesus,"now thats what you call class and style"
a man of few words was Jesus"

I have actually read it,though I may have skipped a bit here and there. I read The Revised Version of The King James Bible, which I think came out in the 1880s and is still more or less readable.
The Old Testament actually has nothing much to do with Christianity,it is mainly a rather remarkable record, for its time,of the Jewish people. It is made up as has been said of different books written at different times by different people. Kings and Chronicles basically tell of the same events in only slightly different ways.
The New Testament is of course about the shadowy historical person that is Jesus Christ, but also about the spin put on his message by one of the first great PR men,St Paul.
One book in each of The Testaments reads as though it was written by somebody on magic mushrooms. Revelations has been very influential amongst mystics/extremists. Ezekiel on the OT is all too similar imo.

Best not to read the modern versions , read the King James Bible , very beautiful

Without it we wouldn’t have Shakespeare and Dylan and Springsteen

Most of Shakespeare predates the King James Bible and it is unlikely that is the version Dylan and Springsteen were familiar with. The original King James version was becoming "difficult" by the 19th century hence the Revised Version which was the accepted one around when I was young. I remember The New English Bible came out when I was in my teens and agree it didn't have the same resonance.
I've occasionally looked at the Gideon's Bible in hotel rooms and that looks to be another version.

yes that’s true but the point remains the King James influenced ( may have been written in part by Shakespeare ) all English and American literature
It’s party the reason why England had more great poets than every other country combined
and more  writers than other countries

People in England were taught it from an early age , it was very influencial in that way , down the centuries leading to Springsteen

Christianity was responsible for the society we enjoyed throughout and after the war years.
Where people were more likely to be honest and posses good manners than were not.
But as religion slipped away so did people's manners and moral standards until we arrived were we are now.

The major shift downwards regarding decent standards of behaviour has been more noticeable amongst working class people. A good example is the jail population.
But the whole of society has suffered for losing the code of ethics that  religion gave us.

It's a shame some people haven't the capacity look at society as a whole, without taking everything personally in a discussion.

Of course you don't need religion in order to be a decent person, and every religious person isn't decent either.

But on the whole religion produces far more decent people than those brought up without a code of conduct.

reading the King James Bible from an early age also contributed to England becoming the most intelligent nation on earth , of course
although that was then not now which might account for dr. crippen having to teach the basics of logical thought to pumphol and case

Let me explain , we are not talking about being religious
We are talking about reading the Bible , preferably the King James Bible

You might say why not read other holy books ?

well they are not written in English for a start , the language itself is very important

and then again it’s not only the language , other books such as the Koran are comletely incomprehensible whatever the language it is written in
By:
lfc1971
When: 04 Dec 18 12:34
There is a reason Springsteen’s language was English , and Elvis of course

Let’s put it this way , it couldn’t have been German or Chinese for example
By:

When: 04 Dec 18 12:36
I haven't read the Koran or Qu'uran or whatever but tbf not only is some of the OT clearly mythical but there are quite a lot of portions of it which hardly make any sense to a modern reader. That's true of Revelations in the NT as well imo though a lot of rather strange sects/cults think otherwise.
By:
lfc1971
When: 04 Dec 18 12:48
Yes there are parts  that are difficult to understand and strange but most of the King James Bible is understable and with many beautiful passages
It is a great work of literature , perhaps the greatest
The Koran however is incomprehensible in the vast majority and has none of these qualities whatsoever

Even the picture of Jesus walking beside the Sea of Galilee , well do  we have that in any other religious book ?
certainly not

Then there was his intelligence , the words he spoke
Most other religious leaders never say anything worthwhile whatsoever
By:
lfc1971
When: 04 Dec 18 12:56
It is the intelligence of the words , and in the words of the Bible
That’s important , it helped England become intelligent

The Koran is mainly gibberish , and the less we say of the life of Muhammad the better
You see these things are important

Of course don’t forget the beauty of Christmas carols at this time of year
Mainly English ( notable exception silent night ) but from the Bible and the Christian religion
no other religions have Christmas carols , there you go
