Island mentality refers to the notion of isolated communities perceiving themselves as exceptional or superior to the rest of the world. This term does not directly refer to a geographically confined society, but to the cultural, moral, or ideological superiority of a community lacking social exposure. Island mentality can be characterized by narrow-mindedness, ignorance, or outright hostility towards any artifact (concept, ideology, lifestyle choice, art form, etc.) originating from outside the geographic area inhabited by the society.

The term "island mentality" is also used in some psychological research[which?] to describe individuals who dislike or have problems with relating to others, and then live as loners or "islands". This concept (in which people may feel inferior, afraid, or alone) has little to nothing to do with the above terminology.

ok Ibra fair enough

Island mentality to me is people on an island that carry a very insular mentality where they they feel they are the centre of the world and either need no or very little outside assistance, influences or evolutionary ideas in order to progress because everything they already know and have is substantial enough to survive and thrive without them, islanders see themselves as different from those on the mainland because by simply being on an island it conjures up an inner belief inside them that they are superior to the rest of the world and have a greater survival instinct, and anyone that dares to control/manipulate/take over their way of life, sovereignty and right to self govern is quickly met with hostility.

Hence the Brexit vote - "WE'RE OUT"!
Report scandanavian_haven November 25, 2018 9:31 PM GMT
dan you say a proper love for their country - but really from a young age, kids of America are forced to swear their allegiances to the flag, i.e. minds conditioned from day 1, hence, Donald Trump nationalistic approach and success in the US elections, well it helped anyway.

I feel that would had been ok before world trade and the internet, I get the more insular examples come from Scotland or say Newcastle.

i live 60 miles from the ocean but i dont feel im on an island, try London for an example, no one there thinks they live on an island.

As an Island you could expect a country to survive without imports of foods, fish, fruits & farms etc.

To self govern seems a given for me, unless like today the elected people only want a part time job Wink

COULD WE ENGLISH BE ANYMORE UNPOPULAR...

Do we care? And why make this just about the English?

On a national level I'd rather be respected (no chance of that now thanks to Theresa May's inept handling of Brexit negotiations) but liked? It's nice but that's all.

Of course, on a personal level, when you go abroad it's incumbent on you to obey local laws and observe customs, try and learn some of the language and generally act like a civilized human being. I find that's generally reciprocated wherever you go in the world and any 'national toxicity' gets quickly forgotten about if you're cool

This was openly admitted by Ted Heath during an interview with Robin Day who challenged him about joining for trade,Heath said it was always about a European state but had declined to acknowledge this during his campaign to join. Hence the distrust about the EU that has been a running sore for decades. The Labour party were always agin it until Blair saw his chance to become President of Brussels.

but I am totally against it

We can have mutual trade treaties, mutual peace treaties  and mutual defence alliances....
but I believe we need our BORDERS(all countries)...I think it protects us in the long term.

Although over time with modern communication and travel, we will become more similar, but don't rush it

When we are finally out, there will be an added inconvenience travelling to and from the EU.
Customs and Passport control. We can make this as efficient as possible with modern technology.

But it would always be a minor hassle.

But in return we would have control of who comes into this country and what they bring with them.
I think it is worth it.
Report UBLE/REGY November 28, 2018 12:38 AM GMT
Of course people will come here and apply for British citizenship. This would be treated on merit.
They will be accepted or they have to go back where they came from.

Of course some of these people come from countries marred by war or with very little economic prospects.
But I am sorry we cannot accept them all.

It is a sad fact of life.
Report UBLE/REGY November 28, 2018 12:44 AM GMT
It would make sense we apply the same rules to NON EU people as well.

In an emergency we may accept a few more than we otherwise would on compassionate grounds.

But we must know who these people are...it will be controlled.
Report sageform November 28, 2018 12:39 PM GMT
As the UK has never signed up to the Schengen agreement, we have always had to show passports on arrival in another EU country and on return to UK so I don't see what will change until you want to go from one Schengen country to another when of course it might but if they don't have border controls between themselves, I don't think it will. I travelled by bus from Spain to Portugal in March and although their was a border point, the bus did not stop.  Similarly we were on a Danube cruise in August that went from the Black Sea to Budapest passing through several countries. The only time that passports were checked was between Romania and Serbia (not in EU) and that applied to all EU residents.
