Religion and Conspiracy theories opposite sides of the same coin. Many inadequate people believe in them it helps their self esteem to feel superior to the non believers, a lot like religion. Very popular in the Middle East by coincidence.
There's quite a lot of psychological studies to support what you say about conspiracy theories but haven't looked at the religious angle. Does make sense though.

there is one 'conspiracy' that appears to be true, and evidence strongly supports it, but the interweb loons like mcann and co. are not interested. it is the one that says putin blew up his own people in a series of apartment bombings, blamed it on moslem terrorists, and flattened chechnya, to roars of approval from the russian public. his popularity soared. maybe, because there is genuine evidence, they dont bother themselves, preferring confected nonsense from 1.01 headbangers like rich d hall? i dunno, but it is curious.
As you probably know Russia and Chechnya have a long and bloodied history. Undoubtedly atrocities were carried out by both sides several times. I think you will find it very difficult to find out any reliable information about this. Muslims and bombs does ring a bell though. The, admittedly small number of Russians I know, do not believe it was a conspiracy i.e. it was the Chechynayans(?) that did it.
