Was made aware of this on the news yesterday for the first time, as most of were I assume, and was shocked to be honest(that they actually did this), although I don't disapprove of the police tactics at all.....in fact was quite amusing to watch and I have NO sympathy for them.

It seems to have been going on for a while and we are told that these type of moped crimes have been reduced by roughly a third since these tactics were adopted.
Fair play I say, but it begs the question as to whether the same tactics will continue or not, now it is out in the open, if the break down in % of the assailants race code is publicly released.
My suspicion is that the vast majority are IC1.....and the same tactics will continue.....

Honestly couldn’t believe it when I heard about it thought maybe it was a gentle bump when the scooter was stopped but the footage on the news shows them flying off the scooter at speed and bouncing down the road !
They could break someone’s neck doing this it’s crazy really

yes they could break their necks - but what is your point
By:

When: 24 Nov 18 09:28
lfc is correct,if one of them broke their neck and paralised....imagine the care cost for the rest of its life?

A nudge hard enough to break a couple of limbs would be more than sufficent and far more cost effective

IMO

my point is that anyone who would take the chance of that happening is a fool , it’s quite a simple point

as long as they don't target delivery drivers - in the islington set we would be very miffed if our supper delivery was cancelled out

shooting and stabbing appears to be continuing here at the same rate as cops are instructed to 'steady as we go' by their top brass

"its impossible for it not to be made public"

what the official figures, (percentage breakdown), on the colour of the "victims" of those knocked off their mopeds?.....

I disagree, doubt very much as to whether these will be made public.....and as I said earlier, if my hunch is right in any case....the same tactics will continue...

you see injera  - you mock me  over a very serious issue - we would get VERY annoyed - imagine a supper evening in Islington destroyed by careless driving

Layenall it is impossible that this practice would not be made public ( I’ve no idea what the colour of the person has to do with it unless you are saying that they should only knock black people off their scooters and not white people or vice versa
By:

When: 24 Nov 18 10:15
the vast majority of them are not of a pale coloured skin

I didn’t say I didn’t know what colour they are , I can see that

An extract from an article in the Guardian.....

"A special team called Scorpion drivers have been trained in tactical contact. Policies were drawn up using legal experts to minimise the chances of officers being prosecuted for using the technique, which was introduced in October 2017. So far this year officers have knocked suspects off their mopeds or scooters 63 times, including those who have taken off their helmets.

One Scorpion driver, Sgt Tony McGovern, said it was one of the hardest tactics to use: “It’s just a slight nudge. It’s controlled.” He said suspects were amazed when in some cases they were sent sprawling off their mopeds. “They are shocked. They say ‘We did not think you were allowed to do that,’ especially when they take off their helmet. They are confused.”

He said other police cars would try to slow the scooter or moped before he and other specialist drivers struck the suspect’s vehicle at “as slow a speed as possible”.

McGovern said Scorpion drivers aimed to minimise injury to those being pursued and civilians. At impact the driver removes her or his foot from the accelerator and uses the brakes to nudge the suspect off the bike, he said. “It’s incredibly quick and very dynamic. Your decision-making changes in a split second.”

Three incidents have been referred to the police watchdog for investigation.

The Met said last year 24% of their pursuits involved officers chasing mopeds or scooters. This year, that figure rose to 40%.

The issue of moped crime has been seen as part of a crimewave that made headlines and added to public unease about the prevalence of violence.

Hailing a fall in crime in which mopeds were used, the Met said from January to October 2017 there were 19,455 offences in London. From January this year to October there were 12,419."

So it seems that 40% of all the met police pursuits/chases this year(I wonder how many there are annually in total), has amounted to only 63 knocked off their mopeds and a reduction in the crime figures of about 7000 for moped crimes.......

Only 3 of these incidents being investigated by the police watchdog as well.....what were the circumstances of these 3 I wonder.....

Do they have guidelines as to who they can or can't knock off their mopeds,(what is the relevance in mentioning in the above report, those who have taken off their helmets), or are they just not that efficient in the chase with a total of only 63 ?!

Anyway, a bit puzzling overall, but the good thing is that there seems to be a reduction in this type of crime....

Obviously if they are not wearing helmets it is more dangerous of course, that’s not hard to understand
By:

When: 24 Nov 18 10:47
Can the police charge them with not wearing a helmet once they've knocked them off the moped.

I think they might be putting chemicals into Londons drinking water sending them all dolally
By:

When: 24 Nov 18 11:04
If anyone thinks that such an aggressive met police tactic,(given the history), would be sanctioned against anyone other than white assailants(with the odd mistake), then they are doolally !! Wink

Of course, official figures may well disprove my theory.....and I would rejoice if they did.....
By:
lfc1971
When: 24 Nov 18 11:11
We are not discussing whether the met police are institutionally racist or not , I don’t happen to think they are , I fact quite the opposite

The question is should they be using this very dangerous tactic ( regardless of the colour of the person )

in my opinion they shouldn’t
By:
lfc1971
When: 24 Nov 18 11:14
Layemall seems to want to discuss some other issues , it’s difficult to know if he would be in favour of this tactic if there were more white people being knocked off scooters
I don’t know
By:
layemall
When: 24 Nov 18 11:16
Agreed lfc, we are not discussing that.......their tactics in general are sanctioned by the government....and always have been....and that is my point...

Perhaps that’s what confused layemail in regard to wearing of
crash helmets
It wasn’t a question of safety , it just made it easier for the police to identify if they were black or white

And then crash knock them off accordingly
By:
lfc1971
When: 24 Nov 18 11:23
It’s ok layemail ,when you come up with a sensible point I’ll let you know
By:

When: 24 Nov 18 11:31
Not confused at all in that regard. They will all (99.99%) be wearing crash helmets to commit these crimes.....or post a video of the 0.01 % who aren't.

I will leave it to your vivid imagination as to how anything else can be ascertained by the police Wink

It was yourself who mentioned the wearing of crash helmets not me

And why it was relevant in regard to safety , of course if you think it has any other relevance what is it ?

Go ahead , enlighten us ....

When a few of these fine young men are badly injured, or worse, these crimes will almost disappear.
