an amazing piece of work and just about my favourite documentary series. A must watch, and it's well to remember this conflict started 53 years before our 'Great War'
Yeah, it has a similar level of quality and depth of analysis as those series Pumphol. It makes up for the lack of moving film with very good use of photographs and narration of letters.
The 'main character' is Shelby Foote, a southern historian, who gives some excellent insights, though he was a bit controversial as considered somewhat partial to the Confederate cause.

Shelby Foote; what a wonderful voice and recollections. Totally agree, tobermory; the letter narration is heartbreaking when added to David McCulloughs post script
i was really looking forward to Ken Burns "The West" which he did some years later; good, but it got lost somewhere along the way, and i ended up slightly disappointed. I suppose one masterpiece is enough in anyones lifetime

It was all about slavery really. 'States Rights' to make slavery legal in the state.
By the end of it people may have had different objectives but slavery was the cause.

Our cotton industry was very badly hit, we needed the raw cotton from the South, which the North blockaded.
We decided not to in the end, well we were against Slavery ourselves.
Also if the South did not win, it could have cost us Canada
Which channel Virgin Media, I would like to watch.

Immediately Abraham Lincoln was elected the Civil War started.
The South always knew he was anti slavery
When it finished Lincoln was assassinated, all he knew was war.

I think the men from both sides fought bravely. for their states.
Slavery was evil it had to be ended.
Although sadly it did not change the life of the freed slaves a lot....most had to continue working on the cotton
plantations for a low wage, with accommodation deducted and had to buy their own food.
It was that stupid assassination ruined everything, it meant there no reconciliation with the South as Lincoln intended.
who continued to view the black man oretty much as before.

All his documentaries are wonderful Blackbarn but I agree - Baseball, Jazz, Civil War, Unforgivable Blackness: The Rise and Fall of Jack Johnson, Jackie Robinson and Vietnam were arguably his best - in no particular order. He is currently working on Country Music (I`ll give that one a miss) which is being released next year. PBS channel regularly show his one off documentaries.
Other Ken Burns documentaries:
Brooklyn Bridge (1981) The Shakers: Hands to Work, Hearts to God (1984) The Statue of Liberty (1985) Huey Long (1985) The Congress (1988) Thomas Hart Benton (1988) Empire of the Air: The Men Who Made Radio (1991) Thomas Jefferson (1997) Lewis & Clark: The Journey of the Corps of Discovery (1997) Frank Lloyd Wright, with Lynn Novick (1998) Not For Ourselves Alone: Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony (1999) Mark Twain (2001) Horatio's Drive: America's First Road Trip (2003) The War (2007, 7 episodes) The National Parks: America's Best Idea (2009) Prohibition, with Lynn Novick (2011) The Dust Bowl (2012) The Central Park Five (2012) Yosemite: A Gathering of Spirit (2013) The Address (2014) The Roosevelts: An Intimate History (2014) Defying the Nazis: The Sharps' War (2016)

I think you mean the United States of America and the Confederate States of America which they already had when the Southern states seceded from the Union.

whatever side and whatever cause, however noble; this was the most obscene of wars. Never ever again should this world of ours see brother bayoneting brother, father shooting son, uncle blowing up uncle, and mother losing her whole family. Politicians; even the best of them, have no right in this life to ask that of another soul

Did he ask Abraham Lincoln?, immediately he was elected the war started
His original policy was No slavery in the New States being opened up in the West, he never said anything about the Southern states?
Still Slavery was as evil as killing our own kith and kin
The South believed they were fighting for their whole way of life
The tragedy of war

The bravery of the men who fought and died on both sides, can not be questioned.
They did what they believed was their duty, and their women supported them as they should(we must not forget their sacrifice)

I'm sure it will Baphornet. I have read quite a lot of civil war stuff and went to Vicksburg Mississippi which has a huge National Military Park with civil war battlegrounds in. It is indeed a fascinating event.
