By:
Ken Burns is a master maker of documentaries.
By:
Remember him when he played centre-back for Nottingham Forest. Hard as nails was Ken.
By:
it's having a re-run on PBS America at the moment; and i'm pretty sure Netflix have it as well for anyone interested.
By:
That would be the American Civil War, presumably.

By:
you can't miss the egotist Custer! Great photos TMM
By:
i'm sure you enjoy it. pumphol
perhaps enjoy is the wrong word. |
By:
*will
By:
Well if its half as good as the World At War or the Great War I'm sure it will be.
By:
i'd struggle to separate it from The World at War, pumphol
By:
Yeah, it has a similar level of quality and depth of analysis as those series Pumphol. It makes up for the lack of moving film with very good use of photographs and narration of letters.
The 'main character' is Shelby Foote, a southern historian, who gives some excellent insights, though he was a bit controversial as considered somewhat partial to the Confederate cause. |
By:
Shelby Foote; what a wonderful voice and recollections. Totally agree, tobermory; the letter narration is heartbreaking when added to David McCulloughs post script
i was really looking forward to Ken Burns "The West" which he did some years later; good, but it got lost somewhere along the way, and i ended up slightly disappointed. I suppose one masterpiece is enough in anyones lifetime |
By:
I remembered from earlyage around the late 60's as their was a collection of very gory collectors cards size of playing cards with really shocking depictions of civil war battles, I mentioned it once on here probably 10 years back not sure what the cards were called, maybe someone will remember them, gonna try to look it up.

Topps cards

Just started to watch this again - Episode 1, 15 minutes in..............In 1860, 1 in 7 of Americans was owned by another American.
Mind you this war was far more than just about slavery. |
By:
Oh, and Shelby D Foote Jr is masterful in the whole series.
By:
Baphornet - "I suppose one masterpiece is enough in anyones lifetime" You should see Baseball and the Vietnam War. The bloke is close to a genius.
By:
I've watched both Blackbarn and although very worthy; Civil War was imvho, his masterpiece
By:
i did mean to say earlier that KB was 37 when Civil War was first shown. I would guess he was a lot younger when he started the epic
By:
It was all about slavery really. 'States Rights' to make slavery legal in the state.
By the end of it people may have had different objectives but slavery was the cause. |
By:
cotton a pall bearer as well; which of course is in much the same vein
By:
This country did consider supporting the South
Our cotton industry was very badly hit, we needed the raw cotton from the South, which the North blockaded. We decided not to in the end, well we were against Slavery ourselves. Also if the South did not win, it could have cost us Canada Which channel Virgin Media, I would like to watch. |
By:
Immediately Abraham Lincoln was elected the Civil War started.
The South always knew he was anti slavery When it finished Lincoln was assassinated, all he knew was war. |
By:
UR: this is a link for the 1st episode, i'm sure someone will help you with VM later. Give it a watch and see what you think

ta Baphornet...
I think the men from both sides fought bravely. for their states. Slavery was evil it had to be ended. Although sadly it did not change the life of the freed slaves a lot....most had to continue working on the cotton plantations for a low wage, with accommodation deducted and had to buy their own food. It was that stupid assassination ruined everything, it meant there no reconciliation with the South as Lincoln intended. who continued to view the black man oretty much as before. |

By:
UBLE/REGY
Which channel Virgin Media, I would like to watch. Channel 276 |
By:
ta pumphol
By:
I don't think reconciliation would have been Lincoln's priority.

All his documentaries are wonderful Blackbarn but I agree - Baseball, Jazz, Civil War, Unforgivable Blackness: The Rise and Fall of Jack Johnson, Jackie Robinson and Vietnam were arguably his best - in no particular order. He is currently working on Country Music (I`ll give that one a miss) which is being released next year. PBS channel regularly show his one off documentaries.
Other Ken Burns documentaries: Brooklyn Bridge (1981) The Shakers: Hands to Work, Hearts to God (1984) The Statue of Liberty (1985) Huey Long (1985) The Congress (1988) Thomas Hart Benton (1988) Empire of the Air: The Men Who Made Radio (1991) Thomas Jefferson (1997) Lewis & Clark: The Journey of the Corps of Discovery (1997) Frank Lloyd Wright, with Lynn Novick (1998) Not For Ourselves Alone: Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony (1999) Mark Twain (2001) Horatio's Drive: America's First Road Trip (2003) The War (2007, 7 episodes) The National Parks: America's Best Idea (2009) Prohibition, with Lynn Novick (2011) The Dust Bowl (2012) The Central Park Five (2012) Yosemite: A Gathering of Spirit (2013) The Address (2014) The Roosevelts: An Intimate History (2014) Defying the Nazis: The Sharps' War (2016) |
