In 1982 came the masterpiece that has perhaps defined Attenborough's career: He directed Gandhi, an epic film that chronicled the life of the pacifist leader Mahatma Gandhi, with Ben Kingsley in the lead role. The work, known for stunning scenes of visual beauty, earned eight Academy Awards, including for best director and best picture.
A fine fine actor and director ....
Attenborough and his family suffered a great personal loss in 2004, when his daughter, Jane, and granddaughter, Lucy, were killed in the Indian Ocean tsunami the day after Christmas. He spoke openly about his grief and never celebrated the holidays after their deaths.
Attenborough survived a stroke in 2008 from which he never fully recovered. He died on August 24, 2014 at the age of 90

I agree with the posters this was a great film, but I could not watch it again, I could not bear the innocent Timothy Evans being hung again.
They did catch up with Christie in the end, he murdered 8 women I think, and luckily they had not abolished capital punishment, so he was strung up. He was a very evil man which David Attenborough caught perfectly.
This case was instrumental in the eventual abolition of capital punishment.
Along with the Derek Bentley case who was hung when his younger companion shot a police officer dead(who was too young to hang). He shouted "let him have it", but nobody knew whether that meant shoot the police officer let him have the gun. A trifle hard to hang him on that I would have thought?
Another interesting case John George Haig, the 'acid bath murder', he killed his victims then dissolved their bodies in acid. The law says nobody could be hung without a body, unfortunately the word body in law meant 'body of evidence'.
A bit careless of Haig there, they hung him at Wandsworth prison in 1949, although he was hardly innocent.
I like anything about murder

I've been recording / watching, The First 48 hours.. Fascinating how the Americans deal with the constant flow of local murders. Over 95% committed by... well (cough)... fellow humans.. Mind Boggling really how they live.
One poor guy just took a wrong turn after visiting relations (not sure if he asked for directions) and the police understood that was his big mistake, Robbed and Shot Dead...
After watching quite a few of these I start thinking maybe they Don't Matter as much....

While the topic is running, who thinks James Hanratty actually was the A6 murderer? Having read the book by Paul Foot, I am quite undecided. Recent dna evidence points only to Hanratty, but some of us suspect darker forces at work. The book by Foot has been discredited by some critics, maybe with an agenda?.. but a very good read anyway.

Murderers seemed more notorious years ago. By chance I seem to have lived close to a few of the sites of the the crimes of Christie, Denis Nilsen and Ruth Ellis.
To keep things up to date I've had someone shot dead yards from my door while I was the there.

The Baron, they wasn't more notorious years ago, it's just that there wasn't as many as today, where some murders hardly get a mention on the news and the reason there's more today, is that there's no deterrent , bring back capital punishment, in those days DNA would have been used to clear the likes of Timothy Evans, but we never had it back then

On Hanratty and the A6 murder, mentioned by @johnizere and @donny osmond above, the gun was found hidden under a bus seat. Hanratty had previously said that bus seats would make good hiding places. Obviously he was wrong because it was found when they cleaned the bus.
From what I recall, his alibi was that he'd been out burgling at the time.

his family provided samples that were a good match, and then they dug him up and got an exact match.
one slight problem was that they had a sample from hanratty that was stored in evidence. this was found to be broken, so could possibly have contaminated all of the evidence.
i'm not aware if all the evidence was stored together...?

Didn't Prof Keith Simpson (who was not involved in Rillington Place) think Evans might have been guilty as well as Christie, or am I misremembering his book?

Ramruma - I was in my teens when I read his book . I don't remember any comments regarding Christie / Evans , but I imagine it would be quite easy to form a similar opinion in the absence of forensic study . Let's face it , a jury believed him to be sufficiently complicit to see him hang .
