BSA Bantam days round the back of the garages, giving 'pillions' to the girls on the estate singing 'UPATREE'. Skirt lengths started to rise, then the beatles blew this stuff into the weeds to be finished off by the Stones.  At least that is how I remember those years it is all a bit of a blur.  ha ha!!!

Yes it was Blackrock but I can't remember its name. Sometimes I'd head into Mitcham where there was a record shop on Fair Green.

It was Congratulation on one side but the song I really liked was The Banner Man.  Originally by Blue Mink..it was some K-Tel type rip off.

I HAD SEVERAL 78RPM RECORDS,BUT THE FIRST 45RPM RECORD I BOUGHT WHEN IT FIRST CAME OUT IN 1960 WAS MY OLD MANS A DUSTMAN BY LONNIE DONEGAN THE B SIDE WAS MY FAV LONNIE DONEGAN SONG I WANNA GO HOME .I WAS 10 MY OLDER FRIEND UP THE STREET HAD A WIND UP RECORD PLAYER THAT ONLY PLAYED 78RPM .HE SOLD IT ME FOR UNDER HALF PRICE 3 SHILLINGS .

MY MAM WORKED AS A CLEANER AT A CATHOLIC SCHOOL AND A BROTHER(that's what they called the teachers there)LIKED MY MAM AND HE GAVE US THEIR OLD GRAMAPHONE FROM THE SCHOOL .IT HAD A SCREW ON IT AND YOU COULD ALTER THE SPEED OF THE RPM BY TURNING THE SCREW.

MY MAM WAS VERY ILL IN BED I WAS 10 .I WAS EXCITED I SAID I CAN BUY LONNIE DONEGAN LATEST RECIRD FOR 3SHILLINGS CAN I HAVE THE MONEY .WE HAD NO MONEY IN THEM DAYS .SHE SAID NO A FIRST .SHE THEN TOLD ME TO GET HER LITTLE PURSE AND SHE GAVE IT ME .THAT 3 SHILLINGS MEANT MORE TO ME THAN ALL THE OTHER MONEY  SHE GAVE ME IN MY LIFE .SHE WAS ILL  AND HAD HARDLY ANY MONEY BUT GAVE HER LITTLE BOY THAT 3,SHILLINGS  TO MAKE HIM HAPPY ?I CAN STILL SEE HER SAT IN HER BED ILL TRYING TO SCRAPE THE MONEY TOGETHER

i use to old records that if they dropped to the floor they would break,think they were made of delph ,how much is that doggy in the window was the record i liked ,but i remember paying 7s -6d for a record called speedy gonzales (fecking 3 half crowns) i think it set me on the wrong road in life.oh and another one called Bambino

The first 45 in the house my brother bought in was the Everley's "Cathy's Clown."

He ran in with it, said, "Look at this, they don't break when you drop them, look!" and as he flexed it, it broke in half!

I recall when CDs arrived, that some were saying it doesn't matter if you scratch them!

I remember a stall in the indoor market selling 'ex duke box' 45's. They had a big hole in the middle and I had to use an adaptor to play them. Some of those duke boxes must have used a rusty nail for a stylus 'cos most of the records were crackly as fook with grossly distorted vocals. Some were wobbly as fook which added a weird dimension to the sound as it slowed and speeded up. My copy of Dreamer by Supertramp was particularly prone to this phenomenon.

Anyway, the 1st 45 single I ever bought with my own money was Lean on Me by Mud. Before that though, my mum bought me Leader of the Gang by Gary Glitter.

I was on a family holiday in Scotland, and my parents gave me some spending money. I bought Gary Glitters Leader of the gang (I am). I had to wait till we got back to Essex before I could play it on my parents Sterio.
