Sometimes called The Black and White War.

This was like a 10 part x 1 hr series on c4 or something a while back? There was also a ww2 in colour as well I think.
Report Dr Crippen October 10, 2018 8:22 PM BST
The series called WW1 in Colour wasn't anywhere near as good quality as that.
Report Just Checking October 10, 2018 9:11 PM BST
Right you are it's much better. Kind of lost a bit of credibility when Legolas shot the zeppelin with a magic bow though :P

Would be great to spot my dad who i don't recall and have never seen any film of, but slim chance.
Report akabula October 10, 2018 11:16 PM BST
He might very well be there in one of the films Kenny.
Wall to wall bravery from these men.

don't think he saw any real action, aka', but could be wrong. just going on what his sister told me yearss ago.

born in skipton in 1899 he did his basic training there, and i traced him as far as france when i did a search a couple of years back.

yes, i believe that's correct Hank. Had turned 50 when I came along. I have his WW1 certificate, Yorkshire Light Infantry.
Report Hank Hill October 11, 2018 12:21 AM BST
very cool kenny. My great grandfather was in the Boer war and was unfortunate enough to be in WW1 in his 40s too! I'd also like to be able to get a photo. I have a description of what he looked like from when he enlisted. Sadly, I don't have anything from my family eg medals etc despite there being a fair few involved.
Report kenny mann October 11, 2018 12:48 AM BST
well i got all my info from one of the ancestry sites, Hank, but wouldn't have thought you would get a photo, but worth a try. Good luck.

Excellent! It's not just the colour but getting the speed right (and stopping the jerkiness) that makes all the difference.

***FYI***
Some people never click on links , I often don't etc ->

For lurkers and so on the link he sent is the peter jackson conversion of some old tapes
to modern standards (thus my little joke about legolas :)). But the conversion seems to
be EXCEPTIONALLY good. Then again .. perhaps the other "converters" could have been better
but lets give credit where due. The tapes I saw (and related tapes on say forces tv) were
brilliant.
Report Just Checking October 11, 2018 9:41 AM BST
The Force TV interview with peter jackson is here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QfomV9GrL6c

There is more footage I think in the ORIGINAL video above so, ymmv, but it's interestng.
He seems a very decent guy in interviews.
Better than me, I won £10 in the lottery 20 years ago and I've never stopped being a **** :)

pretty sure everyone who saw the thread title along with a youtube link would have opened it.

Oh my god is the low calibre of leftie petty p------s SO low that they feel fit to comment to the effect that:
"Someone who posts the EXACT name of a TV series and a youtube link to it this exact name should means people who watched a TV series of that EXACT name should have clicked on it, to remind themself or make sure, and get a sarcastic comment if they didn't?" Jesus H Christ. No wonder no socialist, ever, has done any thing worthwhile.

"should means" dah-de-dah, pick at that mm....
Report scandanavian_haven October 11, 2018 2:36 PM BST
what are you talking about, point is a youtube link is safe to open, I would understand if people don't open links that are unrecognisable/look dodgy.
Report dustybin October 11, 2018 3:09 PM BST
well i got all my info from one of the ancestry sites, Hank, but wouldn't have thought you would get a photo, but worth a try. Good luck.

I did research on my great grandfather many years ago and got about as much as I thought I could.
Then last year I did another search and I came across information that somebody had posted about him on one of these 'pals' regional sites dedicated to WW1.

In many cases you can be thrown off course as whole regiments were disbanded and merged due to the amounts of killing.
I was looking under Royal Irish Rifles as that was who he was with when killed at Passchendale...but somebody had information including photos of him from well before, they didnt know him they just uploaded the information on him.
This was with the Norfolk Regiment who he survived I believe the Somme.

The point is, just because you drew a blank before doesnt mean it will always be the case.
When I say pics of him it almost moved me to tears.

I'm not surprised dusty'. Very interesting post.

Some good food for thought there, Hank.
