They are always fecking red when i arrive at them. And once in a blue moon if i get through without stopping i get a long red at the next set."in the name of god and his holy mother why can someone not sort out this problem(i wish i had a remote control to switch from red to green)."you would think in this day and age 2018 i think, that modern technology could come up with a better system .millions upon millions of pounds are lost  in business every day because people are sitting at traffic lights waiting for red to turn to green.its not rocket science to come up with an idea to keep traffic flowing.its no good trying to manage a system that does not work, they need to invent a new system that caters for the number of cars on the road, traffic lights are past their sell by date.i was driving home today and i got snookered by them, two long reds and a yellow, but then i fluked  a green only to get caught again by another long red.Laugh

brass, many years ago, 80's I think, someone came up with the idea that on a long stretch with many sets of lights there would be electronic signs showing the speed you should travel to hit the next set on green. It was in my then local paper Wolves Express & Star. You being an innovative guy might want to look at resurrecting the idea.

Problem solved - almost but not quite rocket science!

they can invent cars with no drivers and they can not think of a way to keep traffic flowing.the first traffic light invented was in the year 1914 thats 104 years ago and people have cursed them since, time to put in a purple light that means THE LIGHTS ARE RED BUT THERE IS NOTHING COMING THE OTHER WAY,SO YOU CAN KEEP GOINGLaugh

ONE person with a computer for each city  and all traffics lights having a sensor counting cars could control the country with a few clicks to change the lights.
well maybe not that easy but on those lines would save the country millions every day on lost time and more that likely save many lives as people would have no need to speed to catch up on time.

The ones that particularly rile me are pedestrian crossings!

Someone hits the button, and crosses before they get the green light.

Then 30 seconds later, all traffic is stopped while invisible people are crossing!

Too many junctions with traffic lights because councils have got too much money to spend.

A junction with give way lines only costs a bit of paint to maintain, how much does it cost to maintain a set of traffic lights?

A large traffic island near me worked well without traffic lights, after installing lights the queues got longer and the piles of broken glass around the island increased. One day I used the island and the queues had gone - the traffic lights weren't working.

Councils will always find an excuse to spend money

ok,how about this for an idea, allow all cars turning left go through a red light if there is no traffic coming, sounds crazy but think about it ,its a very clever idea from THE BRASS.Cool

IN other words change the red light to turn left flashing green yield light,go if it is safe so to speak, that will clear the left inside lane at all times and keep one lane empty.

Dr, it isn't the councils, it's the government controlled "Highways Agency"....

I think you might have borrowed that from the Americans....

Anyway, that only works if the junction has more than one lane.  I encounter one every weekday morning where the left-hand feeder lane at a single carriageway T-junction always turns green before the right turn, meaning that even though the way you want to go is clear, you still can't fricking well go for another 30 seconds!

Report Lady Faye Verrit September 28, 2018 4:02 PM BST
Brass, that idea is flawed (dependant on the junction and how many lanes!

They tried that in Selby, where there are two lanes; the r/h lane is for right turners only, and the nearside lane is for straight ahead or left.

So they put up a left turn green arrow.

Unfortunately, when the arrow was green, the innocent drivers wanting to go ahead had angry left turn drivers (who weren't aware of the problem)
leaning on their horns, yelling abuse and gesticulating!

i know that lady, but there many sets of lights that stop everyone together for 30 seconds ,but a lot of sets could be fitted with sensors to count the traffic passing on each street or road.and then the lights could react to the volume of traffic .any clever guy could run the whole show in the city of London sitting by his fireside with his computer.
Report brassneck September 28, 2018 7:22 PM BST
they have traffic warning on main roads leading into LONDON and instead of saying "avoid Marble arch ,heavy traffic"you are more likely to read"free starbucks coffee if you fill up with petrol in the next garage on the left.Laugh
