Fox hunting in England was formally established over 400 years ago but in 2005 , following a growing campaign of protests and petitioning by animal welfare groups , one of this country's more ancient rural traditions was abolished by Parliament due to it being deemed as causing unneccessary suffering , despite opposition claiming that it was a practical form of conservation and pest control . Personally , I have never held any strong views on this issue but I fully understand the argument relating to animal welfare and animal rights .
Yesterday I was unfortunate to stumble across a short film showing the slaughter of animals in accordance with the requirements of Halal . The totally unneccessary distress caused to the animals was clearly evident and it was , without doubt , one of the most distressing things I have ever seen . What made it even worse was the fact that it is being carried out in slaughterhouses in the UK .
In October 2015 the government introduced guidelines for Halal and Kosher slaughter , but these guidelines were clearly not being met in the video I watched . A few months earlier a report suggested that only 88% of animals slaughtered by this method were stunned prior to being bled out . There have been subsequent reports and investigations that suggest this figure may be considerably lower . Either way , should we allow Halal slaughterhouses to operate within the UK ? It is , after all , a barbaric method of slaughter that has no physical benefit to those who consume it nor does it have any place in a civilised country that has introduced legislation regarding animal welfare .
Have we simply replaced a traditional British bloodsport with one from another culture ?

So much cruelty done to animals in this and other so called civilised countries. From their slaughter for food, to supposed conservation reasons down to simply sating people's sporting bloodlust.

If it takes some gammons scouring t'internet for reasons to hate other religions to make a concerted effort to minimise unnecessary cruelty then I'm all for it.

Odd though how among the many, many different types of cruelty to animals that take place in this country you want to concentrate on the one specific to muslims.

It just so happens that I inadvertantly viewed a video showing the Halal slaughter of unstunned cattle and sheep . That is why I concentrated on this specific topic .
I have also previously seen video's showing : Badger Baiting and Dog Fighting but as far as I am aware these 'activities' have been banned under previous legislation whereas Halal slaughter is still legal .
Fox Hunting was considered by many , rightly or wrongly , to be an important rural activity and the most efficient method of controlling the Fox population (as opposed to shooting or the use of poisons). Despite this argument it is still banned in the UK .
My main point is why do we allow Halal slaughter ? What is the point of it ? It serves absolutely no purpose whatsoever and is of no benefit to anyone . The method by which an animal is killed and the carcass prepared makes absolutely zero difference to the consumer to whom it is impossible to tell the difference between meat that is killed humanely or inhumanely ! This barbaric practice has no place in a country of so-called 'animal lovers' .
Report PorcupineorPineapple September 23, 2018 3:03 PM BST
Again rey, I was speaking to the major, not you. I'd ban it tomorrow personally. No need. If people want to eat tortured meat then find somewhere else frankly. Same time, standards in some non-religious abattoirs are absolutely diabolical too. Much more needs to be done.

As you say, we call ourselves animal lovers but wilfully turn a blind eye to what is involved in getting food on our plate.
Report Reynard September 23, 2018 3:52 PM BST
Same time, standards in some non-religious abattoirs are absolutely diabolical too. Much more needs to be done.

Agreed , but there is a law that applies to what you describe as non-religious abattoirs and this law should be vigorously enforced .
Halal slaughter didn't even exist in the UK 50 years ago yet now , in the 21st century , we are seeing such produce entering our food chain by stealth . All so-called religious practices should be limited to worship within appointed premises , as opposed to rituals that are outdated and barbaric and have no place in a civilised society on which they are being forcefully imposed against the will of the majority .

Slippy, it is distressing but, at the same time, heartwarming to see the ones that can be brought back to health, and then fostered
before putting up for adoption.

Unfortunately many are to far gone and, at least, can have their years of suffering ended.

The sheer scale of the HSPCA operation is incredible, and the work done by the recovery team is sensational.

Often the homes and animals have just been abandoned, but where the owners are on hand, when the recovery warrant is served, are offered the opportunity to go to court and ask for them to be returned.

More often than not, and with the judge seeing the hideous evidence, that is denied, and they leave the court to be immediately handcuffed and arrested.

Last night I had the misfortune to view hidden cam footage filmed inside a Kosher slaughterhouse in the US (2008) .
Apparently when it was visited by investigators , including a senior Rabbi , the slaughter of cattle was carried out according to US legislation . The following day secret filming revealed that animals were in fact being slaughtered in a manner that caused unneccessary suffering and distress and that the abattoir in question had simply operated within the law only for the duration of the inspection .
This footage was filmed in the US , not the UK , but that is not to say that similar practices aren't carried out in the UK also . What is it with these barbaric alien cultures that they feel it necessary to cause suffering to innocent creatures ? Like I said previously it makes absolutely no difference to the consumer whether the meat they eat is derived from an animal that died peacefully or in agony . It's going to taste the same ! So why bother ? Are these people intrinsically sadistic ?

Report Reynard September 25, 2018 12:11 AM BST
Thanks layemall .
Apparently Halal meat is an essential part of the Muslim faith .
The words Muslim faith refer to an ancient belief system that has no viable function in the civilised world , The Q'uran , like The Bible , being a collection of {allegedly} fictitious stories which have little or no relevance to modern life .
The reciting of a blessing prior to inflicting a slow and painful death on another living creature could be described as nothing short of comical if it wasn't for the suffering that follows in both Halal and Kosher slaughter . Surely they would be better served praying for forgiveness for inflicting such an inhumane death on one of God's creations (assuming one believes in God's creation and the Book of Genesis) . According to their belief system 'Only one animal may be slaughtered at a time and the other animals must not witness any death' . That certainly wasn't the case in the video I saw so clearly they excercise the right to 'cherry pick' specific aspects of their own manual . If selectivity is permitted in relation to the Q'uran then why not omit the whole section relating to Halal and just treat animals in a humane manner , even if they are destined for human consumption ?
As casemoney points out , Halal food has now entered the 'standard' food chain and I think that this is a serious issue , as Lord Trees stated when he addressed the House of Lords regarding this matter . He went on to say that with regard to animal welfare "we are going backwards!" . I have to concur with this .

Is just another example of what a sad joke this country has become.

A "sport" enjoyed for hundreds of years by country folk is banned, while the relatively recent and totally abhorrent practice of halal slaughter is allowed to continue legally in this animal loving country of ours. Btw, I am not pro fox hunting, just object to city folk dictating what country folk can and can't do in their free time.

Have said before, these animal activists would be far better employed demonstrating outside these slaughter houses rather than pulling the master of the hunt off his horse for example!!

And.....as has been asked earlier.....why has one practice been banned and the other allowed to continue?....think the answer to that...most of us know!
For those in any doubt as to whether halal slaughter is an abhorrent practice by our standards, then just watch some of the videos.
Casemoney.....agree...should be all about education......but won't fly as likely to offend and open too many eyes as to the reality of the practice!
