but have at last bought one, a very basic one with good reviews.
On the pack I'm going to cook it says 800w 7.5 mins.
On the microwave it just says medium/ medium high etc.
The label at the back says Rated Power input 1200W Rated Microwave output 700W Does this mean the product I'm cooking will need to be cooked on high for about 9 minutes?
Cheers for help. Pretty sure that's right but as I said never used one before.
Use a palistine. us Islingtonites would never go near won. Think of the planet. (slowly cooking at 700w) Oh OH!! I have become an original wit ( or something sounding similar)

their simply is no hope for kenny - people try two help and he gets aggressive!! The advice to stand in water is correct - perhaps a bath full to help with the burns!!!

Those heating guides are approximate. If for example it's a ready meal it'll need less if it's room temp than out of the fridge.
Just bang on, I use microwaves all the time, they are fantastic.
I doubt you eat meat but the only time I ever worry really is if stuff is frozen, which you do for longer on a lower setting to allow the centre to defrost.
You can always just open the door and give the food a quick test to see if it feels warm enough, I do that all the time.
(I pretty much never read packets and just guess :))
If you microwave stuff too long it can go a bit cardboardy though!
Microwaves are not a gas, they are like lightbulbs, as soon as it stops working it's safe to stick your hand in.

Not so often as I used to Kenny - we have quite a posh one, but I seem to have drifted and my eyesight must have faded. Being friendly with certain owner landlords of these drinking institutions I tend to stick to them rather than chains etc. I have enjoyed 2 or 3 spoons over the years can't see what all the fuss is about them they are ok - generally very good ale. I had a quick one the other day and saw Ruddles on at 1.99 STILL!!!!

Oh I'll post ONE warning. This is if heating water and fairly pure liquids (not soup really).
If you boil water in a microwave and get it very hot it can have a phenomenon where when you move it / clunk it it can suddenly bubble and over. It's sometihng to do with the way microwaves heat it without disturbing it compared to a kettle that allows it to get superheated and when you move it the bubbles find a way to form. But most people don't boil water in one anyway.
Other warning is microwaving eggs, they tend to eggsplode. I sometimes do it (like boil an egg) but if you do put them in some water and put on the medium not high and don't do too long. (If you want a horrible mess to clear up, put an egg in then wait on the bang!).

moisok, the books of vouchers contain lots of drinks and food offers, and come out about twice a year. Generally aimed at students, but if you surreptitiously ask the barman/lady they usually hand you one. I'll be in Beckett's Park Row tomorrow and you can get a pint of real ale with a voucher for £1.79, normally £2.89, expensive for Spoons but they price up according to the City and area usually and Park Row is quite well to do. 4 real ale vouchers a book, plus lots of other dinks , lager etc but I don't use them. Plus you get discount meals too. Lots of vouchers for them.

Thanks JC. I won't be using it for anything apart from the few ready meals I eat, more of which seem to be saying best if microwaved on the pack. Thanks again.

thanks for that kenny - I tend to eschew offers and things like that although my partner might be interested. She collects EVERYTHING and gets quite a lot of dosh back from all sorts of venues etc cheers enjoy your day - nice and sunny here!!!

Park Row is in Leeds. Your partner will save about £200 if she uses ALL the vouches, moisok. More or less impossible, but still decent savings to be had.

Also, to continue JC's points, be careful stirring liquids that are extremely hot as they can explode.Meanwhile https://inews.co.uk/news/brexit/wetherspoons-brexit-beer-mats-ending-eu-tariffs-lower-prices/.https://inews.co.uk/news/consumer/wetherspoo
Kenny just laugh at any of my cruel jibes - especially about cats - we had two - both over 16 years - devastated when they died. I have photos of cats playing golf (they jumped out and up to catch practice balls) asleep in trees, eating rabbit - they hunted when we lived in Somerset!! Birds and mice presents on the mat. (they are terrible killers of birds) The panic in the chicken coops when they came near!!! Dead legs from two of them laying on you for a long time(they were big cats -rescue jobs but very big) My ex wife was adopted by a cat rumoured to be 7 or 8 - lived till about 23 years of age - lived in a box at the bottom of the garden and wouldn't come into the house for many years!!!! As she got older she nervously got used to entering the kitchen and eventually the lounge. The stories were hilarious about this cat. I am going to have to stop typing or I won't be able to see the screen ha ha!! silly old man - but happy days

Some nice little stories there, moisok, beautifully described.
Don't have problems with dead birds here. The Chukar Partridge is rather large for even the cats to tackle,

i have never used a micro wave either Kenny fwiw ...
Quorn is good protein Kenny and a complete protein ...so add in with beans and you get the same deal as a bowl of Chicken and rice combo ..
I try to get my protein at 120g a day when using any weights, sprinting etc ,otherwise on a lazy day 50g is sufficient i believe ...120 g not easy as i'm not a big eater in the first place

I use a microwave to defrost bacon and ham, and to hurry up game, from my freezer, but never ever for cooking! I do allow my dad to heat Tesco ready meals and to reheat meals I have cooked for him. He has strict instructions though (IN BIG LETTERS) and is very good at it....for 91!!

Just read the rest of the thread - What person's life is so busy that microwaving eggs, in any form, is considered desirable or even necessary and don't quote microwaved scrambled egg - that serious spawn of the devil
One of the worlds greatest food units need treating with serious respect and that certainly does not need microwaves.

My much older sister is 91 too, blackbarn. Just gone into a rest home. She was telling me it doesn't seem two minutes since she was on stage with Ernie Wise (then Wiseman) in the Nig Nog reviews.
Hi Coach, I didn't realise Quorn was a complete protein. Perhaps I'll give up the beans and rice which when combined also provide the amino acids the body doesn't produce.

Kenny - "Don't have problems with dead birds here"
RSPB - "The most recent figures of how many creatures are killed by cats are from the Mammal Society. They estimate that cats in the UK catch up to 275 million prey items a year, of which 55 million are birds. This is the number of prey items which were known to have been caught. We don't know how many more the cats caught, but didn't bring home, or how many escaped but subsequently died.

Coach - re soggy, many supermarket ready meals, although not of great quality, are specifically designed for reheating in a microwave and are certainly not soggy and perfectly edible. You (or in my case a 91yo dad) need to be a bit selective as some are much better than others.

worms and snails are generally not threatened species, whereas for various reasons many bird species are. cats are not selective as to species killed - they'd be less likely to know the difference between a Blue Tit and Willow Tit than you. birds do not rise in population in line with the human population (with the possible exception of budgies etc!) there is a clear relationship between growth in the human population and that of pets (including of course cats)

EK, good to see you again btw, and I'm honoured you remember names.

The fist one to pass away was Leo about 7 years ago.
Current stock is Leo, Pebbles and Simon, just Pebbles being female.

Sorry, first to pass away was Cleo, not Leo. Hit me unbelievably hard did that. She used to belong to Joe Johnson's son's girlfeind'd mum. Leo is a lookalike of Cleo, hence the name.

Sorry KM - I've got them all mixed up! When I think of your cats, I always think of Clive Brittain.
Sadly Tootsie passed away. She reached 20 and loved her scratch pad, performing her little shows for us. She loved watching the sun go down on the garage roof, or warming her bum on top of the bolier house. She used to go psychadelic after gnawing away at the catnip so we took it away as we were worried it would hurt her. As she aged she would prefer sitting under the hose cylinder during the summer months.

Microwaves are great for vegetables, in fact from what I've read they are healthier. If you boil vegetables "goodness" leeches out into the water then goes down the sink, if you microwave them no nutrients leave them. (of course if you overcook you may destroy some but that's same any way you do it).

I like cats and grew up with them but they certainly can slaughter the wildlife. There's a place in new zealand looking at banning all cats. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-45347136

kenny mann"I didn't realise Quorn was a complete protein."
I'm no expert so could be wrong here but pretty sure I'm right. I've been veggie for about 20 yrs, use to buy Quorn products quite a lot but hardly ever buy it now. From what I was reading, I don’t believe this is a healthy food, no matter what it says on the package. It’s a highly-processed, artificial product, that is far from natural.
Basically it's genetically modified, and whenever I see GM, to me that is artificial food ! They call it mycoprotein food, but whatever you call it, it's artificial food !

Quorn is fine and certainly is a complete protein. It's nothing wierd, it's just a fungi related to mushrooms grown and processed.
Why some people find that wierd but think eating a cows ringhole minced up with its knee cartilage is fantastic I don't know!

If you want impressive pyrotechnics, try putting in a candle....
Re cooking vegetables, I think not. but the thing to be aware of is that whatever you are heating must have a reasonable water content otherwise it will not cook and your microwave will be a microwave no more!
If you must experiment, with stuff like this, you mist put in a receptacle of water!

Lots of bad press re Quorn which is why at one point the price was slashed!
My daughter gave up on eating beef, but she and I could make a most acceptable Quorn Spag Bol....
Some time later she began suffering very bad stomach cramps and, by being mindful, she realised it was always after eating Quorn!
Apparently it's quite common to not be affected at first, but later you can suffer the same.

"Quorn is fine and certainly is a complete protein. It's nothing wierd"
Just looked this up online....... sounds a bit weird to me !
"Mycoprotein is the predominant ingredient in all Quorn products. It’s made by feeding a fungus, called Fusarium Venenatum, with oxygenated water and glucose while it is fermented. After being heat-treated, the product is then combined with other ingredients to create the Quorn products."
After an American court case Quorn had to change the way that they label their products in the US. Because an 11 year old from California died after eating a ‘Turk’y Burger’. Despite the fact that his mother was aware of his mould allergy, she was not aware that Quorn’s main ingredient was a fungus.

Surely the BEST microwave trick (though not good for microwave so maybe put a little cup of water in) is to microwave a CD :)
It's a shame as people now probably only have music CDs of value but in the days of free AOL CDs on magazines, hours of fun..
Actually no need to waste a CD at all someone will have it on youtoob.

Kenny mann, scrambled eggs cooked in the microwave work very well.
3 eggs in a bowl, salt and pepper and a dash of milk (I put a knob of butter in as well) and beat. High power for 45 seconds, then give them a good stir and then high again for another 45 seconds and jobsagoodun. 2 slices of wholemeal toast and a liberal amount of HP sauce and Bobs yer Uncle.
