Yep.
It was a film that didn't need making.

Am I alone in not wanting to see Toby Jones in everything?
Report portmanpark August 27, 2018 9:18 PM BST
None of the characters remotely resemble the tv series.
Report dambuster August 28, 2018 12:01 PM BST
The TV series is still on 50 years after it was made, Can't imagine this film being repeated in 50 years time.

Every actor in the original Dads Army, were born to play the part.

Arnold Ridley, who played Private Godfrey in the original Dads Army, passed away in 1984. RIP

I managed 90 seconds and turned off. Ridiculous to even attempt a remake.

Most of the cast was of the generations that served in one or both world wars but Arnold Ridley's record is worth a read.

C&P from Wikipedia:

He saw active service in the war, sustaining several serious injuries: his left hand was left virtually useless by injuries sustained on the Somme; his legs were riddled with shrapnel; he was bayonetted in the groin; and the legacy of a blow to the head by a German soldier's rifle butt left him prone to blackouts. He was medically discharged from the army with the rank of Lance Corporal.

Then he re-enlisted for the sequel in 1939, and ended the war in the Home Guard.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arnold_Ridley#Military_service

What Wikipedia does not point out is that to be hit by a German soldier's rifle butt means you'd gone "over the top" and were hand-to-hand fighting in the German trenches.

The Telegraph:
A lot of the battalion was wiped out by machine gunfire, but Ridley and the other survivors simply had to make their way through the trench armed with bayonets and lobbing bombs. He was hit on the head with a rifle butt [which fractured his skull] and fell to the ground.

The German soldier than lunged a bayonet at him, but he managed to save his own life by directing it into his groin rather than his stomach.

He was unconscious for a while but did recover. Then a soldier lunged a bayonet up his hand and through his wrist. He passed out again.

"We can only assume that the German soldier was killed at around the same time because Ridley obviously survived."

Remakes of rv and film classics just doesn`t work.

What a true hero and brave man Godfrey was. He was also a writer and he wrote the classic comedy The Ghost Train starring Arthur Askey.

Quite possible that both statements are true given the lifeless support at Arsenal's home games Grin

I didn't read it and it may have been a parody but there was an article in some godforsaken right-on publication recently criticising Dad's Army for not having enough 'women of colour' in the character line up.
Lord preserve us.

The irony is the Americans who saved us fought in a racially-segregated army. There was controversy because Britain refused to recognise the American colour bars and insisted everyone was equal. Winston Churchill was the Jeremy Corbyn of his day. Devil

is it worse than recent remake of the sweeney ?
Report JOMO II August 31, 2018 5:55 PM BST
I watched about 15 minutes on and off (channel flicking). Indeed, 'twas awful.

Part of the problem for me was that the actors didn't seem to know whether they were meant to be replicating the original cast member's interpretation of the character, or do their own interpretation. Bill Paterson, for example, seemed to be trying to mimic the original Fraser as close as he could, but Toby Jones's Mainwaring (from what little I saw) seemed a completely character... very quiet, none of the jumped up, pretendy-authority that Lowe did to make his comeuppances funny.

That was Dire..No cop series has ever come close to the Sweeney apart from perhaps, Life on Mars.
I reckon if The Sweeney was on prime time TV as oppose to 10.30am on Itv4, it'd still get more viewers than the other stations.

i loved Godfrey in an episode called ''Don't fence me in''.
Mainwaring gets to the gates of the Italian POW camp and sees an Italian skulking across the grounds and calls out..

Mainwaring ..''I say there, come here ( The POW walks over with an apple dribbling out of hes mouth)  Who's in charge here''?.
The italian can't speak English and looks at Mainwaring ,

Mainwaring ..''Can anybody speak Italian?''.

Godfrey... ''I can speak a little sir''.

Mainwaring..''Speak to him Godfrey''.(Godfrey waffles off in Italian) The Italian looks at him in shock !!!

Mainwaring..''That seems to have done the trick Godfrey, what did you say''?.

Godfrey..''Your tiny little hand is frozen, and blue with the cold''.

Mainwaring..''Why on earth did you say that'' ?.

Godfrey..''Its the only Italian i know sir, its from an opera''..
