Ben Stokes

^ Slow !

Beat me to it Leopard!

2 gays been interviwed on beeb, look like julian carey on steroids camper than a fleet of camper vans,

what a laughing stock our justice is so the camera does lie

cost taxpayers a fortune and both men shake hands in court , would make a good farce on stage

Unfrickingbelievable

they,ll probably both go for compensation now claiming their careers and lifes have been affected

must have been cricket fans on jury

All pigs are equal!(however some pigs are more equal than others).

not surprising. there was enough doubt.

the biggest problem with the prosecution was that the brawl needed dividing into two distinct phases rather than one.

The first phase, where stokes could have very legitimately been acting in self defense, was when it was clear he may have been threatened with a bottle.

But there's a break in the fight, and Hales and Hale and Ali are all telling him to stop. He has no need to defend himself at this time, no-one, apart from him, wants the fight to continue. And the prosecution should have asked to jury to focus exclusively on this part of the fight, accepting that up until this part started, Stokes had a legitimate right to defend himself, but afterwards, none.

Oh well, it waits to be seen how the ECB choose to punish Stokes.

one rule for 'em, one for the rest of us.  bang to rights on cctv ...

Affray
A criminal offense generally defined as the fighting of two or more persons in a public place that disturbs others.

Maybe nobody was disturbed.

maybe he's a well known cricketer, not a plumber from Solihull ...

no point having cctv

Again, it's not a surprising result. He was almost certainly guilty, but that almost means that there's reasonable doubt.

Self defense is a legitimate excuse in affray charges. It's the prosecutions job to disprove the defendants claim of self defense beyond reasonable doubt. They failed (as I said below, pretty miserably).

I wonder how it compares with the Duncan Ferguson case. Personally I don’t remember the details of that.

Not comparable I suppose a head butt on the field of play. But prob less injuries inflicted.

just to be clear ... if you hear someone verbally abusing a gay person you can legally punch them in the face and knock them out.

Unless it's part of the panto

hales seen on cctv kicking the blokes head whilst he was grounded.  told the cops he wasn't involved.  interviewed and released.

seriously ..

nope. if someone threatens you a bottle then you can act in self defense.

did he have the same lawyer as oj simpson

stokes will lose millions good job in the end

Prosecution Lawyer Must Be An Impotent Individual.

you reckon?

you reckon the indians (because they are the people who really line cricketers pockets through the IPL) give a singular sh1t about a not guilty affray verdict. ffs, Mohammad Shami played in the 2018 IPL......

when was self defense ever chasing after someone down a street ?

Thought this case was about the shocking last over he bowled v West Indies in the one day final. Guilty as charged as far as im concerned.

hardly a surprising verdict. fact the jury came back in little over 2 hours shows it should have never have got near a court room. clearly stokes is not the sort of bloke you'd wanna get on the wrong side of after he's had a few drinks but once someone came at him with a bottle you've gotta right to defend yourself. probably went a bit far but was always likely to get the benefit of the doubt

If it was geoff boycott fight would of lasted 3 days

absolutely no doubt that Stokes was exceptionally well briefed. In amongst his selective amnesia around certain parts of the night, he was sure to remember the following:

“I felt under threat by these two and felt I had to do whatever it was to keep myself and others around me safe,” he told the jury.

When asked if he had become “enraged” at any point during the fracas, Stokes replied that it was a “difficult question to answer”.

The sportsman added: “I didn’t know they could be carrying more weapons on them.

“They could decide to attack me at any time if I was to turn my back on either of these two.

“At all times I felt under threat from these two.”

those last two comments gave stokes justified motivation for continuing the fight and the knock-out blow and forced it upon the prosecution to prove that this claim was demonstrably false. And there's just enough doubt/ lack of evidence there.

still guilty as f..k

no changing your mind is there mad dog

Someone said earlier, The camera does lie, No it doesn't, But Stokes did, all along imo, but the jury took his word instead of looking at the truth.

the man with the damage eye socket should sue stokes bet stokes would want to settle out of court 1.01

the sad thing is if it was an ordinary man in the street he would be waiting in prison ready to be booked in now.........it makes a mockery of the justice system

its only by luck stokes isn't going the list of one punch killers

joining* the list

Found not guilty by a jury of his peers. Time for everyone to move on I would suggest.

Not guilty is not the same as innocent. The burden of proof lies with the Prosecution.

The Martin case still gets my goat. Jailed for the murder of an intruder who had 29 convictions. Martin served 3 years of an 8 year sentence.

Joke, Justice and political systems, the small man has no chance

Tony Martin shot a fleeing burglar in the back. That's why he was sent to prison, it's very simple.

In USA anyone on your property is fair game.

Maybe, but Tony Martin lived in Norfolk, where they're not.

it's Steven Gerrard all over again

In USA anyone on your property is fair game.

In USA anyone is fair game.

the way our once great country is going,im afraid he is 1.01 to get off.

1.01 landed

should have got at least a ten stretch for being ginger and having a beard imo

Another privileged thug escapes justice.

bit like the muslims eh

What is a Joke is that the Prosecutions were ever Even Considered  , How much has that trial Cost ?  the 3 of them should have been offered a deal for a lesser plea and a Fine ....

Rapists ,Dunmen  and Knifemens running wild about the country and they decide to take 3 pishheads having a Punch up to Court

These are the Cases that Facts and The mob like to see going to Court Something to fill the Front pages of the News papers ,

Get the real Shyte off the Front pages

If you were caught on CCTV behaving like that, whether you were found guilty or not, would your company want to continue employing you, if i had staff like that, they'd be out the door.

Stokes to win SPOTY

overseas

nice link up with OJ

It is quite clear most of the chit chat experts here have quite a clear understanding of how the law works(or should have worked in this case). The jury and judge probably don't have a clue about their job. Now I understand why everyone's whining about the police, courts and the govt all the time

If you don't understand why Stokes is 'not guilty', stick to whining about the usual media blackouts, corbyn, boris, left, right etc...

Im not sure what News you lot have Been watching  ITV have Just shown an Interview with The two Gay Guys saying Aley went for one of them with a Bottle and That is why Stokes got involved ,Infact they thanked Stokes for Helping them out ,Saying he was a Brave Bloke Why were they not called , shirley Questions need to be asked of the Police the two gay men were there from Start to finnish ,why were they not called, It appears it was because of them the Fight kicked off .. With the Gay guys
Evidence there is no case to Answer For stokes, The other two Blokes Should have been charged on their own ..

As for the ECB, can they even punish him? They already made him miss the Ashes(or was that for legal reasons?). Anything ECB throws at Stokes will be thrown back at the ECB, making them look stupid. The guy just got cleared by a court, how can anyone else punish him for this?

J Terry

The videos I saw showed Stokes ' mocking ' the gay guys and flicking a cigarette at them !

Any smokers in the England team? Let’s hope they get into the habit of flicking their butts at Stokes .... just for a laugh.

Facts have a Read of one your Rags ,The Mirror ,for the full story ....

Once again you appear to have got your facts Wrong

Stokes wanted a punch up. He got one. In 2014 he had a fight with a dressing room locker, broke his hand and missed the T20 WC.

He threw 15 (fifteen) punches at these fellas in Bristol!!!

I think the reason the gays weren't used as witnesses is because it would have made Stokes look a tad silly. They could have defended him 11 months ago and chose not to. Stokes' defence team also  chose not to call them. Wonder why...

The case was about provocation between Ali, Hale and Stokes. The jury appears to have concluded it was 6 and 2 3s so shake hands and off you go.

some lords members in the jury

it's a bit of a strange charge. apparently they may have got off cos no bystanders felt threatened by the punch up

Facts have a Read of one your Rags ,The Mirror ,for the full story .... Grin

Once again you appear to have got your facts Wrong Grin

Wrong ? Nope !
Haven't you seen the CCTV  ?

Yes I have the two Gay Guys are still with stokes all the way Through events ,Now if he had been a threat to them I hardly think they would still be with him ?

I saw them interviewed, i never realised they were Gay

^ They made Larry Grayson look like Arthur Mullard

Those on trial were the best of a bad bunch,...indefensible = not guilty verdict. If against joe public he'd have been toast, and cricket career extinguished, absolutely no doubt at all; he's form the length of his arm.

The video I saw, he's clearly mocking them and throwing something at them. Of course they may not have any grudge against Stokes and he might well have been protecting them later in whatever video you saw and I might have missed, but why are you repeatedly trying to deny something that is clearly on video?

The guy was mocking a disabled child some time back. Its not hard to believe he was mocking two gay men, especially when its on video? Its also not hard to believe he was punching people, especially when he has a history of punching stuff when angry, especially when its on video.

Again, he might well have been doing the right thing punching those guys but why should he not have been in court? Its in the court that they decide whether stokes was indeed doing what he claims. If he shouldn't have been in court, you'd be the first person whining about the court charging two men injured in a fight with video clearly showing them getting beaten up by a bully.

You seem to have a special place in your heart for Ben

or you might just have some history with Facts

I hope he gets booed the next time he runs up to bowl, but by then it'll be chip paper

you can not get jail for being a prat

If you could the prisons would be overflowing.

Absolutely bizarre court case.

The incompetence of the police and CPS is never ending.

Hales said he had arrived on the scene after the violence but there was CCTV of him kicking one of the unconscious guys on the floor. And they decide there is no evidence to charge him with anything ! And so Stokes defence was able to argue that maybe Hales broke the eye socket with a kick ! Not that it mattered as Stokes was not charged with any attack or injury to the 2 men but with affray. It turns out they decided to add GBH charges on the day the trial began! But the judge said it was too late. GBH was the only thing Stokes (and Hales) should have been charged with in the first place.

And why weren't the gay couple in the witness box ??? The prosecution used the CCTV and the bouncer's evidence to show Stokes was hostile to them. But apparently they were backing Stokes account. So why weren't they called by the defence

Brown envelope after the trial to put some decent spin on things ?

Tis a strange one.

Decent spin? Unlikely in England.

Make him captain , that’s what the Aussies would do

the gays wernt called because all though sky, bbe, itv etc have had them all over the news stokes only legal team considered them unreliable witnesses ,live in a run down squat, well known in the area for living an unusual live style, social scene and social media lifestyle etc which under cross examanition may have been ripped up for shoithouse paper, but good old itv,sky and bbbc can be 100% guaranteed not  to ask any incriminating or incitful questions, probably end up been gutted like a fish by Lorraine Kelly ,s forensic questioning sometime soon

Move over Sam Curran..thanks for helping out but Ben's back after bringing the game into disrepute. A poor decision IMO.
I was reminded earlier of when Stokes went on instagram and his mocking of a disabled boy was there for all to see. Does not seem a nice person either also IMO opinion. I hope he gets clean bowled first ball knocking out his middle peg which end up stuck in one of his nostrils....and England go on to win.

Nice one Jed

Echo others' thoughts. This stinks.

'Affray' - is a public order offence consisting of the fighting of one or more persons in a public place to the terror of ordinary people.

If noone was 'terrorised' by the punch up, then it aint 'affray'. And that is why neither Stokes nor the other fella was prosecuted.

What a sham.

Joe Root as weak as water...Hardest selection decision?? Don't think so!

stokes=gingre ****

You've got **** all to be happy about.

Nasty piece of work..not Ben ..this guy above^^^^

I was due to pop down the beach yesterday afternoon where a music event was taking place but instead ending up watching that epic Stokes innings on my own With 70 odd runs needed and 1 wicket left i thought the game was up so after a couple of lunchtime pints decided to have a lie down but kept the radio on.Drifted off to sleep only to be awoken by my daughters phone call( thank goodness she DID ring me).Lept down the stairs to watch the game on the tele with England needing 30 odd runs to win to watch the drama unfold.

When Ben hit that winning boundary i unashamedly had tears running down my face as i stood to applaud the greatest innings since Botham's equally fantastic stanza in 81.Counting down the days until battle recommences at OT.

I feel privileged to have witnessed both of those amazing moments...

* Leapt

Burnett sounds like a sour graped Aussie

SUCK IT UP SON

Surely Sir Ben Stokes now?? Imvho that is the best innings I have ever seen.

It was MOM-U-MENTAL, may never happen again and fair play to the aussies, they knew they had witnessed something that was truly remarkable, maybe Sobers or Clive LLOYD in their pomp could have pulled that off but very, very few.

You Irish?

I'm not a big fan of his out of cricket, but damn he can play the game

He can be a hot head I grant you, probably not the sort of bloke I'd have a drink with in the pub that's for sure, but as a cricketer? he's one of the best in the world and you can't argue that

Once again England cricket win thanks to a foreigner.  Bloody umpires.  Bring back Dickie Bird I say.

but not
