yeah i looked him up (after i put it here i might add ) and his win/loss rate was extremely good.
seems that most england managers get unfairly lambasted, when in reality if you lose 1 game in 4 as an england manager you're not doing too badly compared to others.

England have contested matches against over 80 national teams. England have not lost to 50 of them, having earned a perfect winning percentage against 26 of the teams. England have also never beaten five teams.

It seems that having a negative balance against four countries is very good.
Brazil have only three but Italy have eight. Germany and Netherlands have similar numbers. Can't find Uruguay's all-time record

I think England's relatively poor performance in the World Cup has to be put in the context that had we entered in 1930, 1934 and 1938 and the 1942 and 1946 tournaments hadn't been cancelled, we'd have won it at least three times in total.

Cant see that myself Nick, we may have seen invincible back in the day & yes England never lost at home till the 1950's but I dont think we were that good in all honesty.

There's no emoticon for irony so I use the plain smiley.
As far as I know, we didn't enter in the 1930s because of the various political and economic crises around the world. The Foreigh Office were of the opinion that defeat on the football pitch would undermine our overall image of strength across the globe.
Fwiw, shortly after winning the World Cup in 1934, Italy came over to play England at Highbury. England won 3-2.
Having said that, we lost to Czechoslvakia (losing finalists) shortly before the tournament.

Actually, I think you mean to an overseas team. We definitely lost at home to Wales and Scotland in the 1930s.
In fact, Scotland were pretty good in the 30s and until the 1980s, they had recorded more wins against us than we had against them.

Scotland would regularly beat us at home prior to 1900.
Actually, the first overseas team to beat us at home were Rep of Ireland in 1949. We lost 6-3 at home to Hungary in 1953.
Ireland also beat us at home in 1914 but were still part of the UK at the time.

Actually when I said never lost at home meant to say they had never lost at Wembley till Hungary stuffed us in 1953, also think our 1970 team was better than the 66 team & most likely would not have won if played anywhere else, we actually played every game at Wembley in 66, anyway its just my opinion for what its worth.
