Not good prolonged EMF is dangerous especially to children which makes the ad with the song 'I like to move it move it' and the sleeping child in pretty poor taste imo.

They are really pushing them as they can help the company get info about use, but mostly because the government set a target for their uptake and they lean on the power companies to meet that target. Green rubbish really. The cost so much, and have to be regularly replaced as well, that any savings are likely to be outweight by the huge costs we all pay towards them (they don't come directly off your bill but they are paid for indirectly).

If your meter has reached its end of life they are legally entitled to force you to get a new meter otherwise readings might be wrong, but you are NOT forced to get a smart meter, you can get a new dumb meter instead.
Report terry mccann June 14, 2018 7:27 AM BST
All part of the smart grid, join them all up and you f ucked so tell them to p1ss off, also runs at the wrong pulse for the human body, lets face it,if they are giving millions of them for free there Must be something sinister going on
Report trilby22 June 14, 2018 9:35 AM BST
Nae danger of me getting one - that's for sure!  Anyway, I had my meter replaced only a few years ago, so no worries there.
Report Ibrahima Sonko June 14, 2018 12:24 PM BST
They are not free, it is costing the consumer billions to implement. The only good point about them is the daily accurate billing which probably wont work.
Report donny osmond June 14, 2018 12:52 PM BST
government pays for them, so thats us all..

then if you change supplier they might not work with new company

why not wait until a smart meter that works in householders
favour and with every supplier had been produced ?
Report Mick Sturbs June 14, 2018 1:20 PM BST
Surely it is false advertising saying smart meters save you money....If you boil a kettle and have a smart meter it costs the same as if you don't have one
Keep you old meter is my advice.. the older ones eventually run slow and so they actually save you money
Report trilby22 June 14, 2018 1:22 PM BST
I asked this question some time ago.  Apart from some kind of Big Brother agenda, why are they being pushed so heavily?
Report trilby22 June 14, 2018 1:23 PM BST
The spooks will always know when you're in, what you're doing (to a degree, at least), be able to turn you off, etc.
Report donny osmond June 14, 2018 1:47 PM BST
if some folk see they are spending a quid an hour on gas and
electric they may start switching off stuff they need..

end result will be more unemployment as meter readers are no longer required

will savings be passed on to customers or will shareholders make more money
Report DenzilPenberthy June 14, 2018 3:16 PM BST
Plenty of mixed info when researching these things does anyone know (for certain) if they constantly produce EMF waves or only when doing readings?
Report terry mccann June 14, 2018 5:03 PM BST
if you read what ive read the pulse is on 24/7, and don't forget its another piece in the jigsaw that's the smart gridDevil
Report DenzilPenberthy June 14, 2018 5:24 PM BST
I won't be getting one on the basis of the smart grid alone they can all get fcuked for me too many self serving liars and thieves calling the shots.
Report donny osmond June 14, 2018 6:30 PM BST
if they made their charges easier to understand we wouldnt need smart meters

i got a letter asking me to send a reading, letter was from a third party who had
never visited my house

i told supplier and said i wouldnt be writing to a company that was paid to visit my house!

asked for a discount but they said no, lol

Smart energy meters offered to every British home could be as dangerous as a "bullet from a rifle" because of the radiation they emit, campaigners have told MPs.

We need to
change your meters
Hello Mr *******

Your gas and electricity meters need to be upgraded to our new self-reading smart meters. No they don't I  can have the old style meters if I wish.
Why are we changing your meters?
We need to install smart meters into all of our customers' homes as part of a nationwide upgrade programme. The good news is they have great benefits for you:
No need to provide meter readings, they're sent to us automatically. - I don't mind providing meter readings, it's easy.
No more estimated bills. - I couldn't care less if my bills are sometimes estimated.
See how much energy you're using and what it's costing you, with a helpful in-home display. - I know when I have electrical appliances on and roughly what they cost in energy, I am not an idiot.
Book an appointment to get your meter now. It'll only take a couple of hours to fit your meters, and we'll only need to switch your power off for about 30 minutes for each meter.
Yours sincerely
E.ON Smart Meter Team

Energy companies appear to be telling their customers that installing a smart meter is compulsory, despite the Government abandoning its plan to have one in every home by 2020.
Report Ibrahima Sonko June 14, 2018 8:24 PM BST
THEY get paid for hitting targets or more probably fined for missing them.

Got an e-mail today saying "please install one". Replied OK. To be fitted tomorrow.

Assume part Government eco-sh*te, and part they can sack all the meter readers. Get the impression they fouled up the initial specs and it will cost billions to correct.

I shall ask the installer.

I'd rather die than have one of those things installed.
Report Just Checking June 15, 2018 7:15 PM BST
As I say from what I've read it's the government that was putting the pressure on, trying to meet a 2020 target of uptake. They'd been convinced by the ar53holes in the green movement that if everyone knew their power usage and when they were using it they'd all become more energy conscious and cut their energy consumption, it was all about CO2 emission targets etc.

And before anyone starts the person BEHIND this move wasn't big business loving Tories it was that idiot Ed Milliband, way back in 2009 - Labour.

Its all about profit and money, everything is interconnected. Using too much electric then buy something that uses less. Then that product is out of date when it arrives.

Governments are hand in hand with big companies.

I know the way to save money, when i leave my house the fridge is the only thing connected to the grid. I wired my house that way.
Report bodil June 16, 2018 2:21 AM BST
They are trying to install the current ones because the soon-to-be-introduced new ones allow you to swop providers and keep the smart meter, whereas the existing ones are fixed to the company who fit them. Another few billion down the drain. We should shoot failing civil servants, to encourage the others. And then shoot the others.

This scheme was driven by the green community in the bizarre belief that knowing how much energy we use to make a up of tea might influence us to reduce energy useage. The government of the day with Chris Huhne (I believe) and possibly Brussels were heavy into this to capture the green vote and are wasting a billion or two ,while other areas suffer,to meet targets and energy companies are fined heavily for not meeting targets, hence the pressure.A total waste of money for a gimmick.
Report Just Checking June 16, 2018 8:40 PM BST
No it was milliband, I posted a link from 2009 above. Ok the coalition continued it but the libs are kfing idiots as well.

You don't need a proper smart meter anyway, you can get your own that aren't as accurate that give a broad indication, they hang off the main power lead and watch the current and broadcast to your own little LCD receiver display and get the info yourself. Get them for 8 quid on ebay I see. I've one and it's made ZERO difference to my usage.

I don't boil kettles of water just for amusment. Unless I'm on a caravan holiday with Ted.

wasting a billion or two

If only ...
Add a zero to that.

http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/bills/article-5442371/The-9bn-extra-cost-smart-meters.html

Correct about Brussels being involved:

The EU aims to replace at least 80% of electricity meters with smart meters by 2020

https://ec.europa.eu/energy/en/topics/markets-and-consumers/smart-grids-and-meters

Ed Miliband, Chris Huhne, global warmingists, environmentalists, the EU ... With a cast list like that, how could the programme be anything other than unfathomably expensive and leaving everyone far worse off thsn they would have been otherwise?
Report Foinavon June 16, 2018 9:23 PM BST
Eon fitted one a few years back. The only slight advantage is you don't have meter readers calling.
They give you an illuminated dial like a rev counter which goes into the red zone around lunchtime to tell you you've already used too much electricity for the day. We threw that in the bin after about a week. Everything else is fine.
Report Just Checking June 16, 2018 9:31 PM BST
One of my worries about them is that they don't just send data (which means e.g. unscrupulous people at power companies can see when people are away or not, or away on holiday and tell their light fingered mates) they can AFAIK receive it for commands and upgrades. Which is a nice thing for hackers to target.

So you fall out with power company? Switch your power off with a button press. Russian hackers work out how to send a firmware upgrade to brick them?

Imagine how hard it would be to unbrick 20 million homes.
