Is this some sort of a wind-up! Laugh

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/cycling-london-uk-sadiq-khan-bikes-race-class-gender-a8367916.html

Too few women and people from ethnic minority groups cycle in London and more must be done to promote diversity among a largely white, male and middle class biking community, the city’s walking and cycling commissioner has said.

Grand schemes, such as the Cycle Superhighway network of partially-segregated routes linking the suburbs with the centre, are too often perceived as simply a way of getting “middle-aged men cycling faster around the city”, Will Norman acknowledged.

He said he was considering setting diversity targets for London’s cycling population to ensure progress was achieved.

Cycling to work could reduce risk of dying from heart disease
Black, Asian and minority ethnic groups account for about 15 per cent of the city’s cycle trips – around two-thirds less than Transport for London estimates it could be.

Speaking to The Independent, Mr Norman, whose job it is to deliver on Sadiq Khan’s pledge to make walking and cycling safer and easier in the capital, said: “There is a problem with cycling and the way it is perceived of getting middle-aged men cycling faster around the city, which is not the objective at all.

“It touches on something which is a real challenge for London cycling, which is diversity.”

Mr Norman, the capital’s first cycling commissioner, said he wanted to tackle the “gender divide” among cyclists that had spawned the term middle-aged men in lycra – or Mamils.

He added: “Even when we have seen the growth in the number of cyclists, we haven’t seen that diversity.

“There are a number of reasons for that. One is that safety is paramount for getting different people from different walks of life cycling: older people, younger people, those from different backgrounds.”

The mayor’s office has unveiled a number of projects it says will begin to address a lack of diversity, including cycle training courses, grants for community groups who do not typically cycle and promoting electric bikes, as well as expanded cycle routes. On Quietway 1, a new route linking Waterloo with Greenwich, the proportion of women has risen from 29 per cent to 35 per cent.

Duncan Dollimore, road safety and legal campaigns officer at Cycling UK, backed the moves, saying authorities should be “focusing on the barriers that deter people from cycling rather than existing cyclists”.

If a woman rides a bicycle in front of men there is the possibility that she may become uncovered and part of her body may appear or the shape of her body may appear when she moves and air flows around her.

For this reason it is not permissible for her to do that except in the case of necessity or urgent need, on condition that she wear clothes that cover her, with pants and socks underneath.

On the evidence of his pronouncements, the London 'Walking and Cycling Commissioner' role is a total non-job and can be safely scrapped without any negative impact on the city. If the job is entirely taxpayer-funded then the scrapping can't come soon enough.

Good judgement was seemingly not one of the key skills required to obtain this position, yet it still attracted a ludicrous £98k per annum salary.

I am currently 18 months into a 30 month contract, managing the construction of 10 miles of cycle way in North London.
Originally under Boris's tenure, when it went to a public survey it was 18pc for, 82pc against but they went ahead with it anyway.
It has undoubtedly had a negative effect on a lot of small businesses, as a lot of the parking spaces for cafes/corner shops/ takeaways have
been removed to accommodate the cycle ways. How many of us will pay a £1 to park in an NCP just to buy a paper???
And most of the bus laybys have been removed, so every time a bus stops, traffic has to queue up and wait till the bus moves off.

London boroughs are mainly staffed by BAME people who are just happy to have a half decent job.
So when the powerful MOMENTUM backed cycling lobby,  strongly put forward their opinions few will argue, as it might
jeopardize their comfy jobs.
Even Sadique Khan has gone along with it, as he too is just a spokesperson.

So I think this guy is making a political statement against the all-powerful MOMENTUM group, and not just coming out with PC bollox.
Report STUDYFORM June 3, 2018 10:35 PM BST
good evening mmm, not that I'm trying to disturb your relaxation Happy
I don't know - perhaps you can tell me, because I can't find any evidence of it...
I honestly am no fan of momentum, nor have I any affinity for any of it, BUT
Where is momentum lobbying for cycling? Is it THAT powerful?
I've found cycling UK lobbying for it via the "Space for cycling campaign".
Given the "Boris bike" stuff of a few years ago and the fact that this work started "under Boris's tenure" I'm struggling to see why the capitalised momentum references and why London Boroughs being BAME staffed is affecting minority voting for Cycle paths being carried a few years ago.

A bit like the Pete & Dud "Tarzan" sketch;
Your first paragraph, I like. I like your 1st paragraph. A lovely paragraph for the role. That's what I said when I saw you'd posted. I said "A lovely paragraph for the role." I've got nothing to follow your 1st paragraph. The trouble is - neither have you.
Yes, it's inadequate, Mr. Moon. And, to my mind, the British public is not ready for the sight of a one-paragraph cycling through the London byways. However, don't despair. After all, you score over a man with no paragraphs at all. Should a no paragraph man come in here making a point, I should have no hesitation in saying "Get out. Run away."

I am among them. case.
Even in small towns, councillors trying to make a little mark and be important, have sanctioned completely pointless cycle lanes and even more pointless areas at the front at traffic lights so cyclists can wait in front of cars and then pull away first.

All this doesn't even take into account the way cyclists ride:
Freewheeling down slight hills holding up traffic.
Riding 2 abreast.
Going through Red lights (especially in London).
Not signalling.

I think it's all being done so as to remove as many parking spaces as possible, then fleece drivers who need to park somewhere
