Mr Gassama's four-storey dash is a reminder of another Malian hero who gained national prominence in January 2015 during an extremist attack on a Jewish supermarket in Paris.
A young Malian employee, Lassana Bathily, was credited with saving the lives of six hostages including a baby when he led them to a safe hiding place, escaped, then directed gendarmes to their rescue. Two weeks later - after six years of struggling to secure legal residency in France - Mr Bathily was given a medal and a French passport by then President François Hollande. In 2016, he wrote a book ''Je ne suis pas un heros'' (I am no hero) and created a charity whose first project was to provide irrigation for his home village in western Mali. Like Mr Bathily's selfless leadership to save the hostages, Mr Gassama's heroic climb to save the boy cements the image of Mali as a country with a culture of old-fashioned public spiritedness. The Malians seem an OK crowd tbh .. |

Go on Moisok! Oh to hell with it......was he a Muslim! I have to say this looked like a bit of a stunt to me. We don't see how far along the ledge the kid was at the beginning of the climb. I think the kid was standing on something and not just clinging to the ledge for dear life. It was caught beautifully on film. Don't you think the guy on the balcony would have climbed along to try and save the kid? I know there was a partition but he could have got onto the adjacent balcony fairly easily. I hope this was not a stunt because it is a beautiful story and the young man of the hour seems like a genuine lovely guy. Do people really see him as black or Malian or as an immigrant or just as an amazing brave young man? Note to moisok.... Love Trumps hate! |

Just saw another video.
The kid was dangling alone and didn't look like it's feet were resting on anything. The guy in the adjacent balcony was not present as the IMMIGRANT started to scale the building. The guy on the balcony appeared and the kid was moving towards him and possibly he held the kids arm first but the AFRICAN MAN had no idea he was there until the last moment. It was natural for him to grab the kids arm and pull him to safety. Still good to see that moisuk cannot bring himself to mention the hero of the hour was BLACK and is currently an AFRICAN and an IMMIGRANT. He may be a Frenchman soon and a Fire Fighter and tax payer! C'mon moisey say the black fella did good! |

Yes the other guy seemed to be telling the kid to try to climb as the kid clearly makes an attempt. But the black guy surely wans't going to say 'Sir, I see you already reached here first and seem to be making good progress so i'll leave you to it(and off he flies)...Nothing unhoefflich about it, he just did what he should have done without thinking.
Surely the police must have acted against the parents? The kid left alone like that with access to balcony. Mother might just be taking a shower, we seem to be assuming from a half a minute video that she wasn't home. Clearly publicizing the deeds of the parents or the parents themselves is neither in the interest of the media nor the politicians. Both already seem to have gotten their favorite part of the story. |

Apparently the mother was living somewhere else and was to join the family in a few days after the boy moved in with his father awaiting her arrival, if I've read it right

If you notice just as the immigrant reaches the balcony that the kid is dangling from the other guy in the adjacent one is just about to pull him in too.
The immigrant simply HAD to then pull the kid over himself even before he had both legs over otherwise he would have looked a complete berk. It was certainly a brave act and no mistake. But just consider all the people watching living in high rise blocks leaving windows open during the summer months in the belief nobody could climb up......could they? |
