It's good in my opinion, I'm a very harsh critic about films and the likes but I'll give this a very solid 7.5/10 which is a big score in my book. Grant did a good job as Thorpe.

A couple of forumites on this thread have said they turned it off early, and it is also my friends' experience that you had to sit through the first few minutes before something clicked in your head and from then it was an enjoyable romp through a particularly absurd episode in recent history. So give it another go.

Trouble is that it's presented as being a dramatic farce and this undermines to some extent the seriousness of what went on.I would like to know if Scott was consulted about his version of events and his portayal. Unfortunately we know that Thorpe died a few years ago without a stain on his character.

he liked his portrayal in the first episode but not that he seemed to be blamed for thorpes first wifes death.
maybe we can talk about the verdict next week, without spoiling it for those that dont know the outcome

GoBallistic 28 May 18 12:29 Hugh Grant is about 20 years too old for the part
???
Thorpe was around 50 at the time of the Scott scandal. Grant is 57.
Playing the part brilliantly imo.

Jeremy Thorpe was 50 at the time of his trial in 1979, but his affair with Norman Scott was in 1961 and 1962 when Thorpe was 32.
Perhaps that what Go Ballistic meant?

Well yeah, Hugh Grant, good looking chap that he is, will never pass for 32 any more, or even 42. According to wiki he's 11 years older than Scott but seems more like 30 years older

I gave this another chance today. I thought it was brilliant!
I'm dreading the next episode where the dog dies
What happened to Mrs Tish? She seemed to disappear from the story

There was a scene set in 1962 where Scott looked like Jim Morrison with his long locks, in 1962? think not! Ok a tiny blip in my eyes but otherwise very enjoyable watch and I never thought I would ever say this but Hugh Grant is brilliant as Thorpe

If the story about the shooting incident was true, then Scott was incredibly lucky that the gun jammed after the dog was shot!
I agree with 'Facts' - Grant is superb at playing Thorpe and the programme is very well done imo.

Just how hard would it have been for Norman Scott to sort out his national insurance card, back in the days when it was a physical card covered with real stamps?

I don't know the answer Ramruma, but I would have thought that the physical card (retained by a previous employer with whom he had a dispute) would present more probs than the online records of today.

True, blackbarn, but I'd have thought the ease of losing cards in the days before centralised computer records would have meant there must be ways to handle the situation and get replacements, even if it left a gap in your contributions. Norman Scott or whatever he called himself in those days (Jossife?) can't have been the first man to turn up at the Labour Exchange with no card.

@xmoneyx -- that story is a bit strange, or rather it is strange that it is the lead story on the BBC news site.
What does it amount to? The police in Gwent used to think the man who shot Rinka (the dog) had died but now they are not sure. They do not know he is alive but are not sure he is dead.
And that's news?

Whatever happened to the very good actress Carol Royle? She was a beauty Lancashire lass who seems to have dropped of the radar. If my memory is correct, I think her father was Mr Pastry. Another piece of useless trivia!

mac - "Michelle was married to Callan, not a lot of folk know that". Judi Dench always called Edward Woodward, "Ewar Woowar" right from the time someone told her the joke.

The bafta are going to be hard!!!! Poor old Whishaw, would be nailed on for best actor if it wasn't for that nice Mr Grant. The scene in the cafe where he hears the acquittal news is electrifying.

I can't decide who was the most brilliant, Hugh Grant or Ben Wishaw!
The whole thing was superb. The acting, the writing and the filming can't be faulted.
It was all news to me, as although I had heard of Jeremy Thorpe, and I knew there was some sort of scandal surrounding him, I knew very little about it.
I loved it at the end when they showed photographs of them all.
I'm now going to watch the BBC Four documentrary.
I'm glad Norman Scott is still alive. RIP Rinka.

Well last night I drove past Marsham Court by mistake because of diversions. Amazing coincidence, I had just seen most of the first episode that evening. btw 3 bed fat there just sold for 1.25 million. Looks almost ex council.
I remember watching something like the Devils **** or the one before or after it. The scene where the Kings men entered Parliament was on and ~ the birds have flown " was quoted. I think either the very next day or that week Police entered the House of Commons and were allowed in by the Sergeant at Arms ( when they shouldn't be ) and confiscated the computers of Damian Green. Art imitating history and history imitating art!
As casemoney has said you could not make this stuff up. Reality TV at it's best! Well the live events in the 70's were and this TV show is quite brilliant so far. Whishaw winning it for me.
Most people did not believe it at the time. Nobody could believe the Leader of the Liberal Party was a homosexual. I dare say most people did not know what a homosexual was! Nobody could believe that an Honourable Member was capable of being involved in something like this. Most of you will not know we looked up to our " Upper Class " and thought they were better than us. The whole thing was surreal. Nobody could believe anything that happened.....except those who knew I guess and the Police!

I have ashley heard the expression before quite possibly from Black Adder and those writers paying 'omage to Peter Cook but the origin is quite interesting and the fact the Cook added the phrase " self confessed " player of the pink oboe adds to the general guffawing!
Come to think of it I am sure there was a Black Adder scene dedicated to the euphemism's for a Homosexual a Duke of Norfolk, Radish, Uphill Gardener etc etc and I am thinking player of the pink oboe may have been in it.
That is correct blackbarnbut I do not claim the kudos for it! xmoneyx put the youtube clip up and I watched it. I have ashley heard the expression before quite possibly from Black Adder and those writers paying 'omage to Peter Cook but the origin is
Watched the last two parts last night and agree with the consensus on here regarding overall quality and acting in the lead roles.
The George Carman role was well played by the actor who was in Gavin and Stacy who played the husband of Julia Davis's character. Can't remember him in anything else.
Can't remember a more enjoyable watch this year.

Excellent production of an intriguing affair, thought grant caught the character of thorpe wonderfully well.the entire cast were superb, cant remember a better recent bbc effort.dont understand the present police interest in the alleged assassin though given he was acquitted over 30 years ago.

Jack H - I know that your post is an elementary attempt at humour, but on a serious note, I wonder if it actually helps. Wishaw is certainly gay and Norman Scott certainly was and the performance was brilliant, but there are loads of straights playing gays that are equally brilliant - John Hurt etc etc. There are of course, also load of gays playing straights to huge plaudits. We should do a top ten

having watched the documentary afterwards i got the the impression that the real norman scott was far more intelligent than the character portrayed in the play.

Barrowboy - Indeed, and far more intelligent than the press then and now, and history in general portrays him. In the documentary, that followed episode 3, I found him a credible witness of the peculiar events.

New blood in the party - Clement Freud and Cyril Smith.
Not surprised at the decent lunch given to Jeremy, chosen and supplied by Clement himself.
AND........I've always liked Cod with Parsley Sauce....and still do.
nb - I've never voted Liberal

The judge got Scott bang to rights: a fraud, a sponger, a whiner, a parasite.
He was a pretty boy who lived off Thorpe and off the women we saw in the series. At best he was air-headed and inadequate; at worst a blackmailer. Norman Scott might have been the victim in this squalid affair but let us not make him a saint.

Some interesting points, Blackie, and we have H Grant playing a gay. Each to his own of course, but I wouldn't fancy kissing a man like he did.
I would imagine it would be more of a challenge to play a gay/straight part if inclined otherwise.
