It happened in Hackney in 2015
.
http://news.hackney.gov.uk/council-seizes-thirty-eight-illegal-gambling-machines/

and it's happened again in Hackney this year
.
http://www.hackneygazette.co.uk/news/crime-court/jackpot-police-seize-49-illegal-gambling-machines-from-hackney-social-clubs-1-5516417

The machines in the picture say "Only for entertainment. No cash play"
So what's the real story? Are they gambling machines or not? If they are only for entertainment they clearly are not gambling machines. And considering the machines have reappeared after all the warnings and then confiscations in 2015, and the lack of arrests, nobody perceives that they are doing anything wrong. The social clubs have secretaries and claim not to own the machines, so presumably are renting them, but from who? What kind of social club secretary would keep mum when asked about this. So the council say they'll wait for the owners of the machines to show up.

Something is bull**** in these stories, but which part.

They don't want to wake up with a horses head on the pillow

It's usually the Gambling Commission trying to prove they need to exist. Added to the money in licence fees they're missing out on. The involvement of HMRC is about the loss of payment of duty (tax) on any profits.

They aren't being taken away to save the public in any way, just to make sure any gambling money isn't lost to FOBTs, tax and the GC.

By which I mean - any money played on these, isn't being played in a big bookies.
