Yes, 3x32 add a zero for me. The same thing. I tackle mental arithmetic the opposite way round to how it was taught at school for some unknown reason, but it works.

I happened upon a simple way to tell the difference between squared numbers, 'whats the diff between 25 squared and 35 squared for example'. 25x25=625 35x35=1225...difference 600.   add 25+35=60 x by the difference 10  and you have 600. Amaxzing the rubbish we can process when not sleeping.

I have been pardoned and taken down from the naughty step as it gave me vertigo.

Just checked that in my mind with 9 and 12, it works, well done Mo. Is there a general proof of it out there?

if the total cost was £1:10 & the bat coast £1 then subtracting £1 from £1.10 = £0.10
but if the costs of the bat & ball are added then it is £0.05.

The add squares thing described above isn't correct. Why would adding two numbers always equal the difference? Makes no sense.
Random example:
60^2 = 3600
30^2 = 900
Difference is 2700
60 + 30 = 90, x10 = 900
or
10^2 = 100
5^2 = 25
differnce  = 75
(10+5) *10 = 150!

60+30=90  60-30= 30 ....30x90=2700    Back of class and detention for you.

Oh I thought you said just to multiply x10. Well yes that's probably correct..
(X * X) - (Y * Y) = (X + Y) * (X - Y) .. yes that's correct as the +-Y cancels out the dodgy XY.
