John Mills film was a classic.
By:
Watched it last night too and found it mediocre at best.
Not a patch on Ted 2. |
By:
Very poor film , very superficial making it difficult to become involved in the characters or story
By:
When this was first reviewed on here ages ago I scored it 1.5/10 and I stand by that. It truly is an absolutely dreadful film and I was very close to walking out of the cinema half way through.

So boring, a few scenes were very good, and I did manage to hold out and watch it all the way through, storyline jumped around and was confusing, highly over-rated, surprised how it got all those good reviews. I do like war films, Bridge on the River Kwai, Ice Cold In Alex, Tora Tora Tora, my fav 3.

By:
agree overrated lots of critics saying it was Nolan's best - it's not even in his top 5
By:
Tora Tora Tora
incredible film |
By:
when battles scenes went day / night confused me
when trying to plug bullet holes ship was farcical |
By:
Tora Tora Tora.. My dad dragged me to the cinema (i was 7yo) I cried with Boredom..
![]() Dunkirk was so over rated... Might give Tora Tora Tora another chance. |
By:
Dunkirk with Mills and Attenborough is a great film .
By:
The film is a joke , and for the guys giving thier life’s for governments is terrible (both sides) we need you ! F00k off people are now starting to think
By:
Not distracting from what happened in France and Germany

By:
I was going to watch it tonight, you've all spoiled my plans now.
By:
Don’t, some idiot dramatised a sorry story
By:
Not a good film the way they told the story.
It does however show a time when people were proud to be British before the politicians signed everything away. They made sure something like Dunkirk could never happen again by signing up for free movement of people and by signing away our fishing fleet. |
By:
I thought it was quite good except for the 1 hour 1 day 1 week thing whatever that was.
The moment the flotilla of small boats appeared on the horizon I happened to get something in my eye and a lump in my throat. A truly heroic act by civilians entering the lion's den. 'this is just a pleasure yacht and you are going into war'...or something like that. |
By:
I think that generation all came with a pair of brass bollo x, even the women.
By:
I would have preferred more focus on the sheer number of boats (800) used in the operation. I didn't think that came across at all.
It's a film about a fleeing army and a rescue of mammoth proportions. We never saw who they were fleeing from and how close the enemy was! Neither did the public's incredible role in rescuing the British Army hit home. 6/10 and I'm being generous. I did love seeing the Spitfires though... |
By:
Just the 300k personnel saved!!!
Got to ask what idiot let the whole british army to be situalet in France ![]() |
By:
i thought it was masterpiece. wasn't supposed to be character driven, was supposed to seem chaotic.
the fight for life in a relatively confined space with danger either side was genius, the juxtaposition of trying to keep order & while it was every man for himself was superbly portrayed imo. each to their own tho. I can imagine it did not have the same impact on TV it did on the big screen |
By:
agree with northanlite, u really need to see this film in the cinema with the big screen and amazing surround sound to get the full impact
By:
i went with my then 12 year old son. He was inconsolable at the end of it, blubbing like a bairn. I had to swallow a hard
jagged thing too & console the poor lad. It was a 12A but I apologised to him for taking him & upsetting him & he looked at me like I was mental & told me it was the best thing he had ever seen. now that is a movie review ![]() |
By:
if its a poor film on tv its poor film on the big screen , makes no difference
By:
It's a great film but (a) you need a good sound system so you can immerse yourself in it because the soundtrack is a key part of building tension, and (b) it probably helps to know in advance about the three strands (air, beach and boats) having different timelines.
By:
If the soundtrack is good it is good on tv or in the cinema, it wasn't particularly good
By:
also if a film has to rely on the soundtrack it is not going to be a good film,
unless its a musical of course |
By:
By the way the greatness of a musical does not depend on the quality of the sound or if it is in the cinema or the tv or in your bathroom
It depends on the quality of the songs |
By:
It was definitely tense. The opening scene was very, very loud and I'm glad I saw it at the cinema.

I haven`t seen this new film but now I don`t know if I`ll bother after reading so many poor views on here.
... the one man`s opinion that I would always rely on was G2d, who had an encyclopaedic knowledge of movies, but unfortunately he has disappeared. I think the last film he strongly recommended to me was Tangerines, a brilliant film. If you can read this G2D, I hope that you are well and the hound is too! |
