I'm sensing some public scepticism of how Patrick survived not only the deep and icy waters of the Irish Sea, but also then crossed an international border to Ireland, despite his own boat and bag of money now being in police hands.

Personally I'd imagine this feat would be an absolute doddle for a man of Patrick's many and varied skills.

He could, for example, have 'ship hiked' his way to safety, a la Laurel and Hardy in 'Sons of the Desert". Alternatively (and this is my own deduction), I would guess he simply hitched a ride on a passing dolphin, riding him like a aquatic cowboy, possibly remembering back to how 'Marine Boy' did it in the 1960s cartoons. Charming creatures dolphins, always ready to lend a hand to a sailor in distress.

It's possible he even stopped off at a pre-arranged point on the Isle of Man, or indeed Belfast, to collect extra funds/clothes etc before completing the onward journey to Mrs Doyle's welcoming guesthouse.
