Bloody hell, that's awful news.

Not only a great player/champion, but a major figure in the development of Phil T's even greater career of domination.

Met Eric at Newmarket races around 10 years ago, in one of those big tents where him and Keith D were doing some sort of exhibition. He couldn't have been nicer. I offered to buy him a pint of Guinness. He said 'Come here a second" and walked me back to his table, which was groaning under the weight of umpteen other drinks which I guess others had already bought him. He wryly said "I've got a bit of with on with those'.  The Great Man even chalked a leg of darts I played.

An inescapable figure from the dawn of that first great era of Professional Darts. Eric, Alan E, Leighton R and Jocky W, all gone too young.  What a set of rematches in Darts Heaven.

Eric smoked and drank and generally enjoyed himself, reached the top of his profession and lived a comfortable life. Died far too young, of course, but going suddenly is not a bad way to check out all things considered.

Girl I went to school with died this week, aged 38.  Primary and secondary cancers.

Live for today.  Nobody knows what tomorrow has in store.

RIP Eric.  A true, true great, without whom the sport would probably be nothing now.

For anyone who never saw this, may I recommend this 1979 film made about Bristow called 'Arrows". I saw it in the cinema back in the day as the support film. Can't remember what the main feature was.

probably the most famous darts player there will ever be. his on stage arrogance was astounding. recall a final against Lowe when John missed a double with the CC waiting to pounce - Bristow saluted the crowd in victory then proceeded to land his favourite double 16.

That said a thoroughly engaging and entertaining bloke who put darts on the map.  Very sad to see his passing.

RIP Eric Sad

He was born in my 'manor' Hackney, so I have sort of followed his career even though I am not a great fan of darts.

One thing has struck me lately reading obituaries of famous people who were working class but made good, and were  about chit chatters age, is that many of them went to grammar school. It was a great opportunity to succeed in whatever field it seemed.

Don't drink just posting a fact..

Former darts world champion Eric Bristow has suggested football abuse victims are not "proper men" - and has been criticised on social media.
More than 20 ex-footballers have come forward with allegations of historical child sex abuse in the sport, and five police forces are investigating claims.
But Bristow, 59, questioned why they did not "sort out" their abusers "when they got older and fitter".
One of the ex-players, Steve Walters, was "disgusted" by Bristow's remarks.

Who is Barry Bennell?
Abuse claims: What has happened so far?
Writing on Twitter, Bristow, who was made an MBE in 1989, said darts players were "tough guys" and footballers "wimps".
He added the victims should not be able to look themselves in the mirror for not "getting their own back" on their abusers in adulthood.
Several former footballers have waived their right to anonymity in order to go public and raise awareness of alleged historical abuse in football, a step which has won praise from politicians, sport administrators and abuse charities.
Walters has alleged he was abused as a youth player by convicted paedophile and former Crewe coach Barry Bennell.
In other tweets later deleted, Bristow said he "would have went back and sorted that poof out" - before later clarifying he "meant paedophile not poof"

Wasn't 20-year-old malt in fact the reason that Wilkins and Bristow barely made it past sixty?

Stick to fast cars and fast women is the lesson I took. Not that the latter leave you much scope for funding a pension in my experience.Sad
