Farckin bell, I was just doing my end of year ISA/financial thinking and wondering about pensions and old age.
With all these people dropping age 60/61 I'm wondering if I'd just be better blowing it all on fast cars, fast women, and 20 year old malt.. |

sad news. Must admit I never liked him in the early days (being a Jocky Wilson fan) but he grew on me after that and in recent years got my total respect as a man who wasn't afraid t speak his mind. RIP crafty cockney

Bloody hell, that's awful news.
Not only a great player/champion, but a major figure in the development of Phil T's even greater career of domination. Met Eric at Newmarket races around 10 years ago, in one of those big tents where him and Keith D were doing some sort of exhibition. He couldn't have been nicer. I offered to buy him a pint of Guinness. He said 'Come here a second" and walked me back to his table, which was groaning under the weight of umpteen other drinks which I guess others had already bought him. He wryly said "I've got a bit of with on with those'. The Great Man even chalked a leg of darts I played. An inescapable figure from the dawn of that first great era of Professional Darts. Eric, Alan E, Leighton R and Jocky W, all gone too young. What a set of rematches in Darts Heaven. |

What sad news, my favourite player in a great era for darts.
RIP Eric. |
By:
Yea in that era they were such big stars, like footballers. Bristow was Ronaldo and Jocky Wilson was Messi ;)
By:
So who was Cliff Lazarenko? Tommy Lawrence?
By:
bit over the top jc there lol
By:
TBH I think the first Ronaldo statue looked more like Bristow than Ronaldo so I'm not far off!

This must be one of the most memorable comedy sketches of all time:

Eric smoked and drank and generally enjoyed himself, reached the top of his profession and lived a comfortable life. Died far too young, of course, but going suddenly is not a bad way to check out all things considered.
RIP. |

For anyone who never saw this, may I recommend this 1979 film made about Bristow called 'Arrows". I saw it in the cinema back in the day as the support film. Can't remember what the main feature was.

probably the most famous darts player there will ever be. his on stage arrogance was astounding. recall a final against Lowe when John missed a double with the CC waiting to pounce - Bristow saluted the crowd in victory then proceeded to land his favourite double 16.

Don't know the man, other than his darts career, but I wondered if he was like Higgins, White etc. who learned their trade playing for money. Certainly struck me as that type of guy.
By:
Ye he did. His memoir tells us that.
By:
I liked the story Keith Deller told about the time Eric asked him before their game whether he breathed when he threw. Poor Keith was so distracted during the game he could barely hit the board
