I have no trouble getting a good sleep but I do have a lot of trouble knocking off. Would Ovaltine help?

I'm on the wagon so please don't suggest alcohol; I'm looking for an alternative

It all depends on what is on your mind before you go to sleep. If it is trivial then you will sleep well.

If you have had some alcohol one or 2 nights before then you wont sleep well, its a knock on thing. You think you may had slept well after a night out but it wont tell until the night after and sometimes after that......

I don't have any concerns that I'm aware of IS and the last time I drank was over a month ago so that should be out of my system by now. As I said, I sleep soundly once gone but I do struggle to knock off quickly.

I was in a routine and a slept well, the older i get the more i want to go sleep earlier but then would get up earlier. Maybe you need to go to asleep after 11pm/midnight and not get up so early  Plain

The way that helps me sleep when i know im going to struggle to 2am is to think about sleeping and nice people and not the worries, thou that is very, very hard.
Report Aspro March 28, 2018 10:57 PM BST
I'm hoping it is a phase IS but it has been a few weeks now. Perhaps it is the consistency that is causing me concern and keeping me awake now. The good news is that when I do knock off I'm all but guaranteed 7/8 hours
Report ufcdan March 28, 2018 10:57 PM BST
Stop posting sh1t on here about an hour before you go to sleep would also help !
Report Ibrahima Sonko March 28, 2018 11:00 PM BST
lol

We all go through phases of sleep, if we could identify it we would not be on here.

The other week i went 3 nights with less than 4 hours of sleep, last night i did not wake up once and went nearly 8 hours. Hardly ever done b4.

I find reading in bed sends me gently to sleep. A backlit Kindle allows reading in the dark without disturbing Mrs F. It will switch itself off after a few minutes if a page is not turned.

Knocking one out  will, i guarantee you to knock off pronto

Just bought a Kindle Fire Foinavon but haven't taken it to bed yet. Perhaps I should mix it up with twizzle's idea Plain

You could try listening to a Morrisey album.Mischief

Hot milk with honey / Horlicks / Milo / Drinking Chocolate / cocoa, for me.
Report Foinavon March 29, 2018 10:14 AM BST
Combining the two seems like a good idea Aspro.Cool
The Kindle Fire is not such a good reading experience as the Kindle Paperwhite which is a dedicated e-reader but if it suits you, all well and good.

Reminds me of an old joke that you've probably heard before...

What is the difference between knocking one out and an egg?

You can beat an egg Mischief
Report Aspro March 29, 2018 10:53 AM BST
trilby, I've read that drinking chocolate can actually be a stimulant but your first suggestion, of hot milk is considered a good option. Nobody has really answered my original question yet so will try Ovaltine anyway.

Had another good sleep last night but again struggled to knock off for a few hours Sad. Had more in the tank when I woke but decided to get up anyway.
Report Ramruma March 29, 2018 12:55 PM BST
The trouble with Ovaltine and hot milk is that while they might aid falling asleep, they will also get you up at 4 in the morning to empty your bladder.

When I worked rotating shifts, some colleagues used Nytol to sleep during the day but I never tried it myself. One thing that was important was making sure the room was really dark (or try one of those eyemasks).

Cocoa contains caffeine.

Surely that's the last thing you need to make you sleep?
Report Dr Crippen March 29, 2018 1:14 PM BST
If you can't sleep it means you're now working hard enough!

That's what my old boss used to say.
Report Aspro March 29, 2018 1:20 PM BST
I have those blackout curtains fitted in my bedroom so as dark as it can get. Getting up midway through the night is a pain but I usually knock off straight away thereafter so that doesn't bother me as much. Noted Nytol though, will look that up, thanks.

You're so right Dr C, I'm not working hard enough! One of the benefits of retirement Grin
Report trilby22 March 29, 2018 1:33 PM BST
Fair enough with the caffeine but it doesn't seem to affect me much.  I'll quite often have a cuppa tea / coffee afore hitting the sack.

One thing can keep me awake is when I've got something knowing away on my mind.  I've learnt just to put that aside telling myself there's little I can do about it now and will deal with it in the morning.

Listening to LBC or the World Service usually sends me off in under ten minutes.
