Live 1969 - Velvet Underground

"Is this the long-lost Greatest Album Ever Made?" asked Paul Morley in the NME in March 1979.

Very possibly, if only for the moment in Rock And Roll when Doug Yule briefly turns his bass up to 11 for a startling, 5-second riff.

Velvet Underground 1969 best live album
possibly just the best album
Report screaming from beneaththewaves • March 29, 2018 6:10 PM BST
Live 1969 is almost unique among live albums, in that half the tracks on it hadn't been recorded in the studio at the time they were performing those gigs. So it didn't fall into the trap which most other live albums do, of just being a second-rate attempt to sound like the studio version of the songs.

And with John Cale and Nico having departed, the rest of the tracks are so different, they might as well be new songs anyway.

The studio version of What Goes On, for instance, is almost the perfect 4/4 beat, melodic pop song. On Live 1969 it becomes an unstoppable, headlong, motorik thrash, years ahead of its time. Anyone who's heard this, and has access to a guitar, and not felt the urge to thrash those four chords for a minimum of ten minutes the way Lou Reed does here simply has no soul.

Still got the vinyl record. And the programme and tickets from the live Tour concert. I saw them at De Montfort Hall in Leicester.
Will never forget their incredible  performance !!

I've never heard it, but remember Lemmy from Motorhead saying The Who, Live At Leeds was the live album.

UFO's Stranger's In The Night was one of the first rock albums I ever listened to. Must of played it constantly through the summer of 79. But that album may well be a con, as the original starts with Natural Thing where as a later cd I have starts with Hot & Ready : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ytxzUynuFU

Lights Out and especially Rock Bottom (if they are genuine) might be the best two live songs ever put down - Michael Schenker's solo on the latter must be considered right up there as the best of all time - if it's all him.

The Thin Lizzy album is ok, but it drags at times. AC/DC's If You want Blood (another one i was weaned on) is good but I only really listen to their Powerage album now. I'm suprised no ones mentions Cheap Trick's Live at Budokan - that has its moments.

Here's one for you: Metallica - No Remorse @ The Lyceum [Full Bootleg Album (1984). Pretty raw. I was actually at this gig, but don't remember much about it apart form there being hardly anyone there - the touts couldn't give the tickets away. I'm amazed how big Metallica got seeing how so far up themselves they became & all that Napster nonsense.

I can't believe you can remember what an incredible performance Lizzy put on Facts, as i can hardly remember anything about the gigs I attended back in the 80's - and no I wasn't stoned or drunk Plain

I know what you mean, McCoy Carp. I posted this in the Best Punk Records thread a few years ago, when discussion moved onto the Ramones:

I can't remember going to see the Ramones, but my mate Pete swears I did.

Brighton Centre, autumn 1979. Absolutely no recall of the band, the gig, my presence there or anything.Sad But apparently I was there, right at the front, getting pogoed into the bouncers.

Same thing with the Undertones. I've got a ticket stub which says I saw them at Bracknell Sports Centre at that time, but if you asked me, I'd swear blind I'd never even been to Bracknell, never mind gone to see a band whose falsetto appeal I never understood.

And the Only Ones. The only reason I know I saw them somewhere in Windsor in the 1970s was because I was using a town centre urinal afterwards and the chap standing next to me started absent-mindedly humming Glad To Be Gay.

screaming - is your failure to remember these events linked to being deaf?!
Report screaming from beneaththewaves • April 3, 2018 2:52 PM BST
Possible, isn't it? When you're only experiencing a fraction of what's being performed, then the memory may not stick.

On the other hand, I can remember plenty of bad gigs I went to in the 1970s: Dylan at Blackbushe, for one. And all sorts of terrible, plodding rock acts at the Hammersmith Odeon: Rush and Lou Reed stand out as particularly plodding and terrible. Then there was Led Zep at Knebworth: I'll never forget Page's solo on No Quarter, which to my ears went plunk plunk plunkety plunkety plunk (I could hear the amplified sound of the plectrum hitting the strings, but not the notes - bizarre).

Thinking about it, the gigs which do stick in the memory were often for reasons other than the music, even if the music was brilliant: the astonishing stage presence of Ian Curtis with Joy Division at the Lyceum in the Strand (he was a huge bloke, nothing like the fay poet portrayed in the film Control); lighting a Rothman's for Ian McCullough of the Bunnymen at Brighton Art College Basement; A Certain Ratio's over-the-top strobe lights at the same microscopic venue; a few yards up the road at the Richmond I saw Vol Sec, one of the great lost acts which never made it, but it's the sax player in the support act (EileenLove) who sticks in the memory - gawd knows what the name of her band was.

I love Dylan but the one time I saw him live he was very disappointing.
Report screaming from beneaththewaves • April 3, 2018 3:44 PM BST
Same here.

If I wear earplugs, and hold a guitar against my chest, with my chin resting on the soundbox, I can hear the instrument to some extent; and I can tell you that bashing out the three chords of Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues while impersonating the Zim's whine ("down on Rue Morgue AvenYOO-OO") is a lot more satisfying than being there when the man himself performs it.
Report Just Checking • April 3, 2018 9:49 PM BST
Funny how when most of these albums were recorded the bouncers were on you in a flash if they thought you were going to record any of it on a sh1tty little tape player.
And people paid money for cr*p tape bootlegs. Now concerts are filled with 15 rows deep of ars&holes not watching the concert but looking at their mobile phones recording a crap version of the concert.
