Second time I'm trying this as my first attempt just got terminated halfway through Angry

Long story short, in case it happens again.

New laptop last week and I'm getting all sorts of grief with the touchpad and cursor - from closing programmes randomly, to freezing, opening programmes, enlarging and reducing the screen size, highlighting the text, switching through different windows I have open.

Totally random.  Yesterday it behaved all day.  This morning it's happened three times already AngryAngryAngry

I've tried an HP driver update yesterday and it seemed to work for a bit but I can't rely on it for doing work just now in case all my stuff disappears.

Any suggestions folks?

Cheers

Is it a touchpad or a touchscreen/touchpad combo?
Is it on the charger?
Has your partner recently been murdered and do you feel a prescence when you are operating you potters wheel?

(I hate laptop touchpads, get a bluetooth mouse and be done :P).

HP Pavillion touchpad, no touch screen.
Not paid attention to the charger but defo happens when off.  Will keep an eye on that.
Bluetooth mouse sounds interesting.  What's the craic with one of them?  How much?
Report TheBetterBettor March 26, 2018 12:39 PM BST
you can get a mouse from poundland

failing that, it sounds like you need to untick your 'tap again and hold drag' box in your touchpad settings
and deactivate your enchance pointer prescision in your pointer options, for a much smoother ride.

The only option I have in Settings - Device - Touchpad is a drop down menu with four choices of touchpad sensitivity.  Most, high, medium & low.

Noticed the problem on medium, so I changed it to high.  Problem remains.  Switched now to low ... see what happens ...

If it's jumpy that sounds like ghost touching so I'd want a low setting.
Reason I say that is I know on phones anyway they can misbehave when charging.
I think touchpads can be recalibrated, same as phone screens? But it may depend on your model. E.g.:

Oh you said HP pavillion. Above might help but ..
https://support.hp.com/gb-en/document/c03523373

One thing you have to watch for and I HATE THIS STUPID FEATURE is that some touchpads can by default have what's called "tap to click".
What this means is as you move your finger it can interpret two quick touches that you meant to be mousemoves as a click, and that's by design.
This causes all sorts of random openings closing and so on for me as I tend to dab at the touchpad, so switch that off if you don't want it!
I use the button if I want a click.

Settings - Devices - Touchpad - scroll down to get help and type in your problem

Thx JC & Coop.  tried all that and it's mostly for Win7 & 8 anyway.  Will look deeper into it after the Wales / Uruguay game on S4C now ...

That Lenovo link's got some good info in it.  Thanks JC.  I've set everything back to default to see what happens.

Well, Just Checking, everything has been in order since I followed your Lenovo link and did a factory reset.  Thanks for that and, by it, leading me to the deeper touchpad menu.

I was working with the laptop plugged into the charger all day yesterday, so I'll try it on battery power today - until it needs recharged - to see if that causes a problem.

Another few questions, if I may.  I really am not at all keen on this Win10 shinola and hate having to type in a Microsoft password every freaking time I use my laptop.  I've done some basic research and cannot find a way to disable it.  Am I missing something? (apart from the obvious Wink)  Did I read somewhere it's possible to command Win10 to run in Win7 mode / appearance?  Is there any drawback to this?  I've been using 7 for almost ten years now and have gotten kind of used to it!

About these blue tooth mice ... are there any drawbacks with them?  Easy to set up?  They only cost £1? Shocked Really???  I'll have a wee looksee on eBay just now.  Is their set-up straightforward?  Cheers.

ps - I used to be a techie, working as a FSE for Siemens ... but that was over ten years ago.  Much has changed in IT Crazy

Ps, I don't like that the battery and keyboard are integral parts of the laptop.  I've got a k/b protector but what is the best way to ensure the battery lives a long life & what is it's expectancy?  I usually have it plugged in 99% of the time.  Is this wise or should I let it drain itself occasionally / more often?
Report Ramruma March 27, 2018 6:11 AM BST
Passwords -- you can probably change it to use a PIN instead, or even a fingerprint if the hardware is there. One of my work laptops uses a PIN and the other a password, and I can't say that one is much easier than the other.

If you have the screensaver pop up if you don't touch the keyboard for half an hour, then require a password to get rid of it, you can change the timeout.
Report trilby22 March 27, 2018 6:20 AM BST
Thx Ram.  I tried changing it to something basic but Micro-feckin-soft insists on certain criteria to make it more secure.  I'll try the timeout idea but it's still a pain having to "sign-in" everytime I turn the thing on.

Absolutely NAE DANGER of me knowingly register my dabs!  Same with this big brother iris recognition borrats Angry

I read a story about Microsoft watching us somewhere yesterday.  I'll see if I can find it and post it up ..

^ I've even stuff a dob of Blutak over the camera aperture Grin
Report Ramruma March 27, 2018 6:25 AM BST
Forgot to say how!

Settings > account > sign-in options -- you could set this to Never btw -- set up PIN

Settings > personalisation > lock screen > screen saver settings (not screen timeout which is when it goes blank, though maybe you could look at that separately) -- alter wait time

Okay, I'll check it out.  Thanks Happy

Just changed p/w to PIN.  Will close down and re-start to see if it works ...

Hey, that's much better!  Nice one, I can live with that.  Thank you Happy
