Ok so after years of putting it off i've finally applied for a provisional driving license.
Any ideas of the best/quickest ways to learn? Ideally i'd look into doing an intensive if they still do them.
Is the theory tricky these days and no i wont be asking ant for lessons Scared cheers

a crash course is usually the best way
Report DenzilPenberthy March 19, 2018 4:53 PM GMT
It's harder than ever now so if I was you I'd only go for it if you're fully committed, don't go into it half hearted or else you could be chucking money away all over the place.
Report DenzilPenberthy March 19, 2018 4:59 PM GMT
You've also got the expense of keeping a motor to take into account is it worth it if you've gone so long without needing one?
Report DenzilPenberthy March 19, 2018 5:15 PM GMT
Sorry for the multiple posts I'm flicking back and forwards to racesBlush

Should've added I'm in mine practically everyday and have plenty days out in the good weather but can be an expensive do.
I gave up the sauce for health but I probably spent something like what I would've drinking on days out and running the car so to me it's recreational use as well as practical.
Can be restrictive driving after a night on the pop etc. so that becomes another reason to leave it at the door alot of the time.

Just something i want to get done and ticked off as in the future i would like kids so would really need a car.
No rush or need for one straight away but would like to get it done.
As you may have read from previous posts i do like a beer or 9 so would stop me drinking as much if i know im driving the next day etc.
Already paid £34 for the provisional so im pot commited already

Take it in an Auto,  Crash course .you will pass in a couple of Days loads of Automatics these days .Think Lessons cheaper as well ,As Denzil Said, think of Other costs Insurance not Cheap ,Spec for New drivers..

Good luck prepared83 just make sure you put the graft in for the theory I know of a couple of lads who had to repeat as they took it for granted.
Report prepared83 March 19, 2018 6:24 PM GMT

Go online and practise theory tests; I failed my first one Blush even though I passed my test in '82

My daughter passed a few weeks ago at the second attempt but she went for the regular one rather than a crash course. From start to finish, including the failed test, it cost me pennies short of a grand
Report prepared83 March 19, 2018 6:52 PM GMT
Cheers for the info aspro, could you possible post a link to the online practice test? thanks

...is one. UK Gov does a few too. Well worth doing though; it took a few times to get on top of it (I think I only had 3/4 questions on my test) but you soon get used to them. Good luck!

I think learning in a manual is probably the wisest option. You don't want to be restricted to automatic license only.

My missus has an automatic and they are great to drive. I certainly wouldn't put a new driver off having one as their first car.
Report prepared83 March 19, 2018 7:58 PM GMT
cheers aspro had a random go at the first one and got 82% which is a fail Shocked good link though.
Kenbo i'll ask about and see what people/instructor says about manuel/automatic and then make a decision thanks
Report Aspro March 19, 2018 8:04 PM GMT
82% isn't bad for a first attempt; not sure I got that high myself!

FWIW I'd only ever recommend a manual; I pushed my daughter for that one

Given a Choice I would rather Driver an Auto than a Manual , Some Semi Auto boxes are good fun ..  I passed manual . 1st time

Firstly, do not learn in an automatic, as you will more than likely regret it later!

I had eleven lessons and passed first time.
Reason being that I bought a cheap car, and drove all over the place, and in all weather, with friends, one of who had a full licence.
I think I might have been lucky, as some happening had caused gridlock, and we didn't move for almost twenty minutes,

Did the same for my wife, but she only had six lessons, and passed first time.
Also for all three of the 'kids', and we drove around for hours in the countryside where we lived, and all passed first time.

Having said that, I wouldn't fancy doing it in a built up area!

On my thread "Losing my license", it's been more than six weeks since I notified DVLA, and still waiting!

If they decide to do an assessment, and it involves theory, I probably won't have a clue! Scared

Took both my kids out regularly when they were learning to drive. No trying to help/outdo the instructor but just wanted to give them time behind the wheel. I planned where we were going to go (monotonously I only had a few routes) but there would be no right turns for them to be concerned about - it was all about giving them familiarity & confidence for when they were being taught

Good Luck I passed on my 6th attempt, had 1 week left on the Theory or I would have had to take it again. That was 16 years ago when I was a young 38.
Report Platini March 24, 2018 10:01 AM GMT
If I was a youngster, I'd be learning in an automatic - all cars will be electric soon - i.e automatic
