No OD other than Barney who is alive and well, seriously how do they know what colour they were. From skeletons they can get an idea of body shape but the skin must of disintegrated!

Some dinosaurs had feathers and some of these fossilised feathers contain granules of melanin which can be compared to that contained in modern feathers to give a good idea of the colour.  As for scales, you don't need to be genius to know they're likely to be a greenish colour.  The crocodile hasn't changed since the days of the dinosaurs so their colouring can help as a guide.

Evolution  process (random set of events as it is ) dictated/decided/chose which colours were discarded and which were best for the job at any given time but it's like penalty kicks over season and these things level over a billion years imo ,you don't need Sherlock Holmes to work it out ,the the colours would mostly be predetermined imo .Millions of mad random gene mutations aside it was the colour of the vegetation that set the tone for land based creatures and in the water they were dark on top and light underneath ,birds are a bit more complicated and seems at times evolution gave them an art pass do as they wished with colour
