Hobson's Choice 7:45 Talking Pictures TV

Not seen it for a long time, great film.

Prunella Scales as the other sister.

One of the other sisters rather.

I must see this again, but no tv

Charles Laughton is one of my favourite actors, even as a young attractive woman I adored him.  I will say it again men are soooo lucky that they can be attractive even as old and unattractive as Laughton.

It is not the end of your love lives when a man gets older, women are not as one dimensional as men

Recorded it earlier when I spotted it. CL was a brilliant actor.

Talking Pictures is a magnificent channel as I have pointed out before.

Heard Martin Sheen talking about this as he was in a play recently. He is going to be in a play by Gore Vidal soon. A political play that rings some bells about what is going on now, The Best Man.

I didn't realise this was a David Lean film I would like to have seen it but missed it.

Oh and Basil!

On for another hour WD.

It will be repeated probably within the next week or 2. Many films are.

One for the notebook. Apparently they had to hide the booze from Newton during filming this.

Sun 18 Mar 18     2:15     This Happy Breed     1944. Drama. Director: David Lean. Stars Robert Newton, Celia Johnson, John Mills & Stanley Holloway. After WW1, a family lead an ordinary sort of life until the outbreak of WW2.

Thanks Kenny,

I will look out for it

You can get the schedule for the next 4 weeks.

Watched this last night on stew's recommendation and have to say the film was very disappointing.Went on too long and more filling than a Mr Kipling's apple tart. That said  i do love this channel and i must thank  kenny for bringing it to my awareness.

Thanks,

Found it on freeview yesterday but not on sky

Some great films there, some interesting!

Wish they had subtitles on this channel.

They hint at it on their twitter feed, but considering the demographic audience, it should be really considered

Vintage film channel Talking Pictures is to start offering subtitles.

The channel confirmed this week that the "first batch" of films have now been scripted and subtitled for the first time ever.

Many of Talking Pictures' output predates the arrival of TV subtitles by several decades, meaning that unlike other TV channels who acquire more recent archive programming, Talking Pictures has had to create its own subtitles.

All being well, according to the channel, the first subtitled programmes will be available from 15th March 2018, but will be limited to a "select amount of content" initially.

Internal tests began earlier this week to prepare for the launch of subtitles.

Their Facebook feed says it's £5k per film, which is astronomical for such a small, niche channel

Annie-your love would have been unrequited.  Mr Laughton batted for the other side. His marriage to Elsa Lanchester was of the lavender type! I hope this clarifies the matter. Great actor though-his finest role arguably was Claudius in I Claudius.

I liked Laughton in the film ''Witness for the prosecution'' with Marlene Dietrich.

We should be getting that again soon.

I did know he was gay, Slicer, but probably not when I first saw him act.  I don't  think I have seen 'I Claudius' with him in it, I hope it gets on talking pictures, when I have a tv!  I loved the tv version with derek jacobi and I have the book but haven't read it yet.

I love 'Witness for the Prosecution' Dr Crippen, but I think Marlene Dietrich spoiled it by her overacting.
