RIP but I struggled always to find him at all funny. He had this mad zany image. I never really found myself laughing at him and this would be going back to the 1970s. I had him as fairly tight, a bit similar to Lester as both had run ins with the taxman. Or were a lot like that back then? They were just found out.

At the insistence of my good lady we went to see him in Worthing. Can't say I roared with laughter, it was probably one hour of fun packed into four but glad I did seem him the once as love him or loathe him, he was a British icon. He had a good innings but RIP nevertheless, just to add he was never vulgar and didn't offend anyone.

He gave me one of his tickling sticks as compensation for making fun of my jersey, I had made the mistake of getting front row tickets, anybody in the front row was fair game.

A humble man who led a normal quiet life in Knotty Ash. Born and died in the same house a hundred yards from the Parish church where he worshipped all of his life. Saw him live many times including a radio program 'Workers' playtime at the English Electric factory in Liverpool in 1963. Never told jokes, just astute observations on life which is what today's comedians do. A great way to watch him at his best is in past episodes of the 'Good old Days'.

Awful news. Thought the Great Man would go on forever. He was on TV a few weeks ago, speaking from his hospital bed, passing on a message to someone I've since forgotten.
Rest In Peace Kenneth Arthur Dodd : "Singer, Photographic Playboy and Failed Accountant.”

The first Audience with Ken Dodd on ITV was one of the funniest progs I have ever seen. The 2nd one was not very good. I went to see him in Eastbourne several years ago. The show started at 7.00pm and finished at 12.15 am. The audience must have known what was coming because the theatre was full until the halfway break. Half left at the intermission and there was only about a third left at the end of the performance. The first half was very good, but the 2nd half consisted mainly of interaction with the audience which I found boring. Interestingly the long term partner he married was a solo musician who was a supporting act on the show. I saw him in a wheel chair leaving hospital on the tv reports this morning and was shocked by his appearance. He was obviously allowed to go home to die. Absolutely unique and unlikely ever to be equalled.RIP.

In some respects they were fortunate to be operating in a happier time before every joke told on TV first had to go before some Politburo of Approval, to ensure that it might not offend someone, somewhere on Planet Earth.

Let's all hope that Sir Ken has taken a tip from leading tax-avoider Tony 'Socialism For All' Benn, and put his affairs in order so that he avoids Inheritance Tax.

One tweet this morning was very apt (must have sat on it waiting for the day)
RIP Sir Ken Dodd. One of the all time greats. The funeral will be held on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and most of Saturday

I am glad I had the opportunity to take my children to see the incomparable Mr Dodd a few years ago. Now as young adults they remember the five hour show as a unique and wonderful evening.
RIP Doddy , simply the best.

That was extremely sad to read that Doddy has passed away. He brought pleasure to millions and was part of the furniture in British comedy for decades.

"Some accountants are comedians, but a comedian can never be an accountant".
The wise words of the late George Carman QC, in defence of Dodd at the trial.

What a beautiful day, missus! What a beautiful day for shoving a cucumber through your neighbour's letterbox and shouting, 'Look out! The Martians are coming!'
Dodd did deal in vulgar jokes, but only the best kind - the ones which rely on the listener being the one with the vulgar imagination.
RIP

I wonder whether Ken's estate will be arranged in a similar way to that of the Socialist Tax Dodger (and doubtless 'lovely man') Tony Benn ?

He did surreal humour before Monty Python, though I'd be happy to see them make a funeral pyre out of tickling sticks and burn the diddy men on it.
Great move marrying his partner a few days before to stuff the IR on inheritance tax.
