I'm a bit ropey on names these days but have definitely seen a video referring to Bannisters' coach who was a well known blood doper/doctor (Austrian I think) who worked in Athletics all his life and was banned by Ausralia's national team for such practices.
It's believed that Bannister was used as a guinea pig for his methods which were rife and ungoverned for years,a bit like now really.
For anyone interested in the history of doping in sport I've posted a couple of links which I found interesting given it's effects on sports history.

I watch many videos online regarding doping and a good source of information is from an Australian named durianrider and he mentions Stampfl and has referenced books with evidence.
To be honest at that time there was an explosion in performance enhancing experiments and it will be almost certain that anyone making any out of the ordinary progress was on something just as it is now.

Not even cold ffs and there are accusations of him being a doper.  This is not the time; show some respect Angry

Pioneer who was a world class athlete, and was knighted for his services to medicine (not athletics).  Breaker of arguably the most significant barrier in the history of any sport.
RIP

I accuse all athletes of note from 1952 onwards alive or dead of not being full natural competitors because if they were all natural they wouldn't have been athletes of note in the first place.
My comments have nothing to do with respect as I respect ALL athletes and the work ethic/mentality they have are their best qualities.

i actually ran on the hallowed track at iffley road in my youth. it wasn't cinder by then obviously. the southern schools regional athletics meeting used to take place there and i was quite a useful middle distance runner back in the day. can't remember if i did the 800 or 1500

RIP Sir Roger

I was thinking how fast he would run on modern tracks with modern shoes and training methods. Phenomenal athlete and so were his pacemakers!

Chataway

and Brasher

were held in equally high regard I think.

Truly a time when we were Kings!

It means that to be an elite athlete that has achieved things others can't you have to be taking performance enhancers of some kind otherwise it's not possible.
