The card game “Poker” first was called such around the early 19th century. ... There was also a German card game that is similar to Poker called “Pochspiel”, which in turn got its name from the German word “pochen” (which is also where the French “Poque” got its name). “Pochen” at the time meant “to brag or bluff”.22 Aug 2012

I don't know the odds on that, Leopard, but I had a hand the other day on omaha when I had a full house, aces over kings and went allin only to find to my horror that he had four of a kind kings, but then on the river card another ace turned up and I had four of a kind aces!

I sometimes play the freeroll they keep giving me on holdem but I find it a bit boring after omaha.
I think it is being a woman, men like bluffing and being aggressive but I am hopeless with that. I find it is a real flaw in my playing Perhaps I should get a transgender operation!

the odds against the 5 pairs would be slightly less than the 1/1,419,857.
this figure would then have to be divided by 126 (perm any 5 from 9)
perhaps all 9 hands were pairs.the odds against the 5 pairs would be slightly less than the 1/1,419,857. this figure would then have to be divided by 126 (perm any 5 from 9)
The game has changed dramatically over the years Annie as players gain experience. I used to play the 6 seater stts and just play position. Eventually the noobies got wise to it but it was really profitable whilst it lasted.

I agree, akabula. I used to love holdem sngs but as you say they got horribly aggressive and most hands were over before the deal. I don't call that playing cards. At least in omaha you get to the deal most times.

The Leopard 27 Feb 18 22:48 Chance of pocket pair = 1/17
1/17 ^ 5 = 1 / 1,419,857
Odds could be near this
It is actually very complex to work out these kind of problems. For a start if you have a pair it is actually more likely that another pair is dealt.
A pair being dealt is 78/1326 (16-1) but after the first pair is out it moves to 74/1225 (15.5-1)
Anyway using 16-1^5 is fair enough as an approx for 5 players getting pairs at a 5 handed table but as there are 9 players being dealt so you have to adjust. Maybe 17^5/126 as there are 126 combs of 5 in nine? That would bring it down to 11268-1 which seems a bit low so prob not right.

I was playing in a game when a bloke (rightly) folded pocket 7s, but he folded everything that wasn't good and only played about 1 hand in 10. Anyway the first 2 cards on the flop...7...7 The odds against that must be big too.
The thing is, the odds against any specific things on the preflop are huge. You could ask what are the odds of everyone getting consecutive cards. eg, 5 6, 2 3, 9 10, 6 7. It's more or less impossible to calculate.

ALSO, just remembered why I stopped playing internet poker. I was Betfair Poker as it happens. A big tournament. In the 1st 9 hands of the tournament, on my table, there were pocket Aces to someone at the table (not the same person, in fact I got them once). They only held up 2 or 3 times. Anyone all-in might well have lost. Which is quite useful for the originators of a massive number of player tourney.

amazing because the land based casinos are trying to squeeze every last penny from the players.
i spendt a lot of time in 1990's playing poker, kalooki and occasionally backgammon in the local casinos.at no time did they charge me a penny, tea with cake or sandwitches were free but the girls serving were always tipped. when the holdem comps began about 1992 they were always money added comps and a bottle of champagne was given for the best hand before the final table and another for the best hand in the final. it was only a few months before the added money and the champagne stopped but i was never charged a entry fee.
i reckon it would cost me more than £10K a year to play the for same amount of time these days.

It was a bit like when they used to give free buffets in the early 80's, JML.
The casinos thought that they could invite loads of people to play Poker (or eat free food) and incentivise it. But after a while it became apparent that not only did the people turning up not play any other games (which was the hope), but they put the regulars off coming to the casino.
Not bad while it lasted though.

the card room i used provided plenty of buisness for the roulette and blackjack tables and a well positioned and busy card room improves the atmosphere of the whole casino.
it was the kalooki players that really help fill the card room most of the time.

Not much wrong with how you played that hand, I don’t think. Making your set on the flop was the right time to push with the two overcards on the board, he had paired either you’re getting called and big fav to win. Just very unlucky. Your previous hand, I agree with whoever said you needed to get the fk out of dodge. With that many live and only tens on that board, you’re highly unlikely to be in front.
