The European Union has urged six Balkan states to seize their “historic” opportunity to join the bloc by overcoming major problems posed by crime and corruption, their ailing economies and long-standing disputes between themselves.

In unveiling its strategy for another wave of expansion, the EUSSR also called on Serbia, Albania, Montenegro, Bosnia, Macedonia and Kosovo to commit their futures unequivocally to the union, amid rising Russian and Chinese influence in the region.

Only Serbia and Montenegro have formally opened accession talks with the EU, and Brussels said they could hope to join by about 2025 if they found “definitive solutions to disputes with neighbours”. “

As Serbia in particular pursues close ties with Russia, the six EU hopefuls were also told that there “can be no ambiguity by leaders about where the western Balkans belong and the direction in which they are heading”.

To help the region prepare for membership, Brussels said it would increase pre-accession funding that is expected to amount to almost €1.1 billion in 2018 alone.

EU to get power to punish UK during Brexit transition: sources

The European Union will be able to punish Britain for breaking the rules of its post-Brexit transition period under plans agreed by Brussels on Tuesday, EU sources said.

Under plans for the 21-month transition after Britain leaves the bloc on March 29, 2019, London must abide by all EU laws without having any decision-making power -- turning the country into what critics call a "vassal state".

The latest EU draft of the transition agreement says the bloc should be able to cut Britain's access to the EU's single market if it misbehaves, and if there is not likely to be enough time to take the issue to the bloc's top court in Luxembourg.

The punishment clause -- part of the draft text which the European Commission is set to publish on Wednesday -- emerged as Brexit negotiations resumed in Brussels.

Punishments should happen "where it considers that referring the matter to the Court of Justice of the European Union would not bring in appropriate time the necessary remedies," the source confirmed the text as saying.

If May accepts this she is finished.

This Balkans business is further evidence of political manoeuvring by the EU.

We must have been stupid to think they'd ever try to live in peace with Russia.
Their plans for a EU army, and their fury at Britain for walking away and shattering years of preparations prove the point.

..... overcoming major problems posed by crime and corruption, their ailing economies and long-standing disputes between themselves.

What a dreadful aspiration.

It's the stupidity of the people drafting these documents that is most staggering - do they genuinely believe that the European Union can just wish away the centuries of animosity between, say, Kosovo and Serbia?

Perhaps they do, because they do after all claim to be the force which has maintained the peace in Western Europe for the last seventy years LaughLaughLaugh

Also it is a little rich for a body which refuses to have its accounts examined to be mentioning corruption in other countries.

Read it that way too Dave. People must be horrified at the prospect of less crime, corruption and sorting out their economies. Who'd want that?
Report saddo • February 7, 2018 3:07 PM GMT
They don't overcome these problems though, they just take them with em when they move to other countries. Look at the Albanian crime over here already.
Report donny osmond • February 7, 2018 3:13 PM GMT
is albania in the eu?
Report saddo • February 7, 2018 3:28 PM GMT
That are being groomed to join but some can't wait, 50,000 of em entered Germany during the refugee debacle.

so they dont have right of free movement to uk

so its not really an eu related problem
Report saddo • February 7, 2018 3:40 PM GMT
I never said they were in the EU. The op is about these countries joining the EU, who already pay them billions to 'get ready'. I don't understand what you mean by not an EU problem. This country has lots of Albanian criminals, freedom of movement or not.

Interesting to read that some people think that the EU can sort out a country's economy.

Report donny osmond • February 7, 2018 3:51 PM GMT
if we do have them here then we have means of getting rid as they are not here under eu law

its not the same issue

its fault of our government for allowing illegal foreign criminals to remain here

its remarkable how brexiters regurgitate the same lies time after time.  Let's have the "bent bananas" and "I want to buy my carrots by the pound".

will punishment  involve barbed wire, sentries, machine gun posts, minefields and wooden cabins for 50 people at a time??  Do they have a history of this - has it been done before  - I know britain did once. How did Germany get on with this tactic?

and it is funny when you think of the massive increase in certain crime groups and individuals who have inserted themselves into the uk via the eu - if you are talking about reducing crime

the cops were out arresting two lots of traffickers only the other day

just saying
Report saddo • February 8, 2018 8:39 AM GMT
Yes, they are bound to have less crime in these countries prior to joining if a lot of their criminals have already left for richer pickings. The crime doesn't stop, someone else gets it.
