Apparently only the simple Paracetamol helps, everything else is a waste of time.

Keep a bottle of Whisky handy.
A nice malt like Glenfiddich would ease the pain.
A glass early evening and again later on before bed will help.

Mrs has been going through over a week of coughing after about 2 days of having the other cold symptoms.
There's loads about.
No cure for a cold nor a cough, just time. Lemsip (paracetamol) might ease temperature. Advocaat or alcohol might help with sleep.
Mostly though - cough medicine doesn't work - no matter what it claims, the warming feeling as swallowed gives a good impression of doing something (sorry slippy).
Probably why it's always advertised by cartoons and has such descriptions as "Helps" and loads of misdirection.

1tsp honey   put in a pan  simmer gently
twice a day clears sore throats/coughs colds in 3 days

I get a cough about 3 times a year, usually lasts for about 2 months (sometimes longer). No cough medicine in the world gets near it. Homemade remedies ? I've tried them all.
Nothing touches it. Only thing that makes a difference is strong sunshine, a few days of that usually clears it right up.

There used to be a "cold cure" which said in the Ad. "may help to ease the symptons of a cold or flu."  Almost every word says it does nothing to cure your cold.
