Right, I know its possibly not the place but the betfair community tend to be a knowledgable bunch.
My broadband is 150mbs and I get that on a speedtest on my phone.
My pc is plugged in to a 500mbs powerline adapter using a 5e lan cable, but only gets speeds of a little less than 100mbs
I have googled a bit and done know whether I should try cat 6 cables, 1meg powerline, a wifi dongle or just suck it up at 100mbs??

I'm not an expert but I believe you are always going to get slower speed over a powerline because of interference from other electrical items plugged in.

The rating of your adapter is just the maximum throughput that is possible and not the speed that it will necessarily work at.

Go to your internet provider (online) and try all their recommended fixes. You may be pleasantly surprised.

An old router can be an issue. So too lack of RAM.

Try to clear out as many unwanted files as you can using online advice.

Make sure your 'tin foil hat' is kept away from the router
