20p an egg is cheaper than the supermarket anyway isn't it?
Report saddo January 18, 2018 9:10 PM GMT
About a quid for 6 large free range at Lidl, I'd rather have his^^ though.

Most people have no idea of the TASTE difference between a cheap supermarket egg and a free range one from a local farm or supplier.  If you don't notice the difference, find another farm.
Report saddo January 18, 2018 10:40 PM GMT
You can tell when you crack em, free range very thin shells imo.
Report bigH January 18, 2018 10:43 PM GMT
Very lucky living where I do as it is easy to buy eggs from local people who keep hens

£1 for 6 eggs

eggs at the end of the driveway, just drop a quid in the honesty box

I also get honey, chutney, jam the same way

Report Lady Faye Verrit January 18, 2018 11:16 PM GMT
I pay £2.00 a dozen from my egg woman and, whilst she has some in the house, ready to go, she collects them
for me in the boxes I take back.

Some are still warm, and double yolkers are common, with the occasional blue one.

They vary in size, but some are so big that the boxes won't close.
Report blackbarn January 18, 2018 11:33 PM GMT
This seems to have rapidly developed into a fred for real fans of proper eggs.  I think we are all in violent agreement.
Report johnizere January 19, 2018 12:48 AM GMT
My next door neighbour has about 15 chickens, and I regularly get (free!) eggs from them. Shop bought eggs are nowhere near the taste and quality of them. Saddo is correct about the shells, they're paper thin too.
Report lybertyne January 19, 2018 5:26 AM GMT
When I was a boy we had chickens and no shortage of eggs.  As Lady Faye says above, double yolkers were surprisingly common.  Each chicken laid 4-5 times a week; not every day like clock-work as many people think they do.  They were in a stable at night and during the day they could wander around outside.  They loved worms.  Awfully hard job cleaning their stable out every day; especially in summer when it's hot.  One night a fox or foxes got into the stable and killed them all.  Just feathers left.  It was a sad day but I never resented the foxes.  I always knew they were just trying to survive like every other creature on Earth.  Such is life.
Report johnizere January 19, 2018 9:11 AM GMT
Yes, foxes are around here too, taken some of my neighbour's chickens in the past. luckily not had a problem with them in the last couple of years.
My neighbour has a metal chicken figure on top of a post near the hen house, and one day there was an almighty thud as a sparrowhawk decided to attack it at speed, as they do. It didn't survive!
Had sparrowhawks attack other birds in my garden before...

I wish there was a local farm near me that would supply the same produce and price that The Dragon gets, I'd even be happy to pay a fiver delivery charge and I'd be a regular customer most definitely.
Report Callisto-moon January 19, 2018 12:28 PM GMT
my local farm is much more expensive.
but the farmers wife is a cracking sort.
Report lovegod January 19, 2018 12:51 PM GMT
You mean she cracks the eggs for you?
Report dambuster January 19, 2018 12:56 PM GMT
I've got 4 hens and have kept hens for about 4 years, the eggs are lovely, and my wife puts them outside our house for sale, 6 for £1.00 the locals in our village love them..we don't make a profit, it just goes towards there feed and bedding... Luverly, you can certainly tell the difference to the supermarket ones
Report Dr Crippen January 19, 2018 1:09 PM GMT
Went to a farmers shop once on a farm well away from any town.
Asked about something I couldn't see on display.

The assistant said ''oh we might have those in later when George comes back from the wholesalers.''

I thought marvellous, they're selling exactly the same stuff I can get in the town and at a higher price probably.

There used to be a van that delivered eggs in these parts . On the side was painted a fowl in a Superman outfit and the slogan "Supercock The Housewife's Friend".

How many eggs does a hen lay? 1 a day, week or what?
Report treble January 19, 2018 8:47 PM GMT
I add eggs are one of my most fave foods. The taste of buttered white bread dipped into runny egg yolk is one of lifes pleasures.
Report SlippyBlue January 19, 2018 8:56 PM GMT
I agree treble. This morning I had two well toasted English muffins with crispy streaky bacon and my perfectly made runny poached eggs on top which, even though I say so myself, was a very solid 10/10 start to my day.
Report blackbarn January 19, 2018 9:25 PM GMT
What is ridiculous about eggs is that they come ready to go in their own natural container, happy for even two weeks out of the fridge, no extraneous plastic wrapping, taste delicious almost irrespective of how they are cooked etc etc etc. God's own food imo.

Aye right. I've had someone PMing me about excel, your doing?
Report treble January 19, 2018 9:50 PM GMT
Cheers Delta. The way my lot goes through eggs I'd need about 4 hens. If I ever get lucky and get a big enough place, it's definitely something I'd want to do.

What are hens like towards people in a pet sort of way? Do they recognise their keepers and interact with them?
Report Knight Commander January 19, 2018 10:35 PM GMT
Question is what made the first person to see an egg drop out of a hen think it would be good to eat? Tongue Out
Report screaming from beneaththewaves January 19, 2018 11:11 PM GMT
The best part of free-range chickens, if you have horses, is the way they immediately kick the horse droppings apart searching for insects and gut worm larvae. The droppings and larvae then dry out, and you don't need to waste hours out in fields scooping up sh1t into wheelbarrows.

If you've never tasted free-range chicken, you don't know what you're missing. You wouldn't believe it's the same species which produces the rubbery, watery stuff you get in shops. I can't recommend the poultry from this place too highly:

http://www.beechridgefarm.co.uk/shop/chicken/

The birds get slaughtered on the farm, rather than being taken to a factory, which is important, and the chicken breasts (with skin) have a taste beyond compare. The duck livers are excellent too.
Report cooperman January 20, 2018 10:12 AM GMT
The difference in taste is massive and the lovely golden coloured yolk is a treat.

Don't they give people tablets to reduce their cholesterol, and are not eggs full of cholesterol?

There seems some conflict here when people say eggs are healthy.

Everybody's already got a source of free-range eggs somewhere within a few hundred yards down here in Zummerzet, K C.

Can you actually send eggs by mail order anyway?

Do give them a try, dunlaying. They're decent people.

There's no need to eat animal food products at all.

Especially if you suffer from fatigue.

I eat loads of eggs Kenny but never think of them as a result of cruelty.

Free range eggs sourced locally.
Report Lady Faye Verrit January 21, 2018 1:02 PM GMT
Occasionally, for convenience, I have bought from shops/supermarkets but they are just never fresh.

Watery whites that spread everywhere when frying and just don't hold together when poaching!
Only good for boiled or scrambled.

On the contrary, fresh ones are not the best for boiling, as they are difficult to peel, if that's what you want!
