What total bollock$.The ECB and the Gambling commission must be the two most inept organisations in the stratosphere.
Report donny osmond January 17, 2018 11:57 AM GMT
they probably were worried he would be charged with a worse crime.

he plans to defend the charge, so let him play.
Report twizzle22 January 17, 2018 12:04 PM GMT

When cricket allows the bowler to attempt to take the head off a batsman at least 1 permissible attempt per every 6 balls then there are bigger worries than what a cricketer gets up to while p1ssed on a night out.
Report DStyle January 17, 2018 1:02 PM GMT
I actually think the ECB should have announced this while meting out whatever punishment it deemed necessary. A statement suggesting that they are waiting until everything over makes their earlier decision look stupid.

I don't think it was the ECB's job to categorise the incident, but with the video footage, and the CPS now deciding what this was, the ECB shouldn't wait to punish him until after his trial, which may not be for another year. Whether a court finds him guilty or not, is neither here nor there. The ECB should pass judgement on whether this behaviour deserves punishment or not based on the standards expected of an international cricketer. And let's be honest, it's a bit more serious than pouring a pint over a colleague's head in an empty bar.
Report dustybin January 17, 2018 1:29 PM GMT
I believe ECB were more concerned about the possibility of Stokes having to return to England for questioning while in the mist of competition in Australia.
Report twizzle22 January 17, 2018 2:09 PM GMT
That may well have been the case but the mere POSSIBILITY of that occurrence should not have played any part in the ECB's decision in standing Stokes down from the tour. The Australian cricket board must  literally be pi$$ing themselves.
Report dustybin January 17, 2018 2:19 PM GMT
Everything is PR nowadays, had he gone and he been charged people who have ripped the flesh from their backs in condemnation.

I think we are way beyond any type of 'reasonable' decision making and are now in the laps of those who attempt to make issues where issues never used to exist.
Report mafeking January 17, 2018 3:21 PM GMT
if he'd been charged with a more serious offence like GBH sure he would have remained suspended. as it is so slowly do the wheels of justice grind the current case might not be resolved until the end of the summer meaning him missing a whole year of cricket for not the most serious looking drunken brawl

more concerning to me is this seems to a regular occurrence (being out to all hours during a match or series) for several members of the england team. indicates they have no respect for the captain, management or teammates
Report Injera January 17, 2018 3:58 PM GMT
Bizarre turn of events as FTP says.

The ECB had an employer/employee situation to resolve. Stokes had brought England cricket into disrepute by being out late again and caught on camera in a fight.

Legally though he was and remains innocent unless proven guilty.

The ECB should have fined him heavily (for being out late) made him do 'community cricket stuff' in Oz on his days off but pick him for every single test match until Plod summon him.

In no way would this have prejudiced any legal enquiry. It was an internal, employment matter.

Report dustybin January 18, 2018 7:56 PM GMT
I do follow cricket and what he gets upto outside of cricket I couldnt care less.
As long as hes available, IE not in jail then he plays as far as Im concerned.
Report LAMBETH WALK January 18, 2018 8:16 PM GMT
Affray is a bastard charge ... you can be nicked for doing nothing .. its a charge that gives old bill too much power...and they dont usually care if anyone is innocent.. as long as THEY get a result ...

The strategy certainly coincided with an undeserved upturn in fortunes, poaching players from RSA (mainly) Zimbabwe, WI, NZ and Eire. Top ranked test team, T20 champions, #1 ODI ranking - all off the back of non-english players.

That being said, the good old england batting collapse is still a regular feature of the summerLaugh

ECB, FA, FIFA, OLYMPICS, RFU all run by a bunch of corrupt, self serving bodies. Unless Stokes upsets a member of the hierarchy (like Peterson) I'd say he's a knocker for selection, guilty or innocent.
